I have been wanting to do this for some time. Where did you get the music box? Did you make it? Looking great by the way, only I think it may be more appealing if the gears/pulleys were metal. How are you going to regulate the speed of the engine to properly play the music? Please update, I'll follow this closely!

Half player piano, half Calliope...

Normally these movements have a built in governor, which I can't see on your one, so maybe your one has built-in drag to cope with fast winding. If so, you'll need a way to limit the speed otherwise you'll possibly force the mechanism and likely break it. Anyway, really neat project, should be great!

cheers, Ian

I've seen little crank driven music boxes, without governor, on sale in toy shops her in Portugal.

I also find amusing a little tube thing with a 2 inch piston that sounds like a cow when you flip it over.:D

I have three such setups in the works, two that have a crank input and on that is wind up. I plan on removing the winder on the one. To drive the ones with the crank I made a disc with a notch to drive the crank. I wanted a system that allowed the removal of the unmodified music box. The only crucial measurement is the height to the center line of the crank from the surface that the music mechanism rests on. I also have a simple lock that keeps the music box from moving around. The music box assembly sits on to the top of a wooden sounding board. The motor and reduction gear train sits on a solid metal leg which is isolated from the sounding board with felt cushioned clamps.

A quick look on eBay UK shows quite a few crank type for not a lot of money. There are plenty of wind up ones that could probably be modified simply. Choice of plastic boxed, wooden boxed 'original' or open movements.
