I recently purchased a 60's era sewing machine for the motor. When I opened it up I had to change my plans but found some good stuff. The motor has a worm and wheel drive rather than belt. The combo is 'fast' - turning the wheel allows the worm to turn. But the good news is the machine has plastic discs to change stitches. This is run by another worm and wheel combo(24:1) which may come in handy if you are making a small rotary table.
