In metalwork the best we can do is to continue to even out the hills and valleys. I think Rake posted a photo in another thread of a surface roughness gage of the visual kind for reference.

Metal polishing begins where grinding and lapping leaves off. There is no filler, just a microscopic smearing of the surface metal. As I said earlier, an Ra4 finish is where you start seeing yourself in a mirror like finish.

Teeth are a whole nuther ballgame.
