Hi everybody,i have purchased an old advance which i am in the process of
of restoring.I want to make a few ball handle and looked at the various designs
One of the mods for the sieg was to use the compound as part of a vertical slide
In my Design time (The time between going to bed and falling asleep) i wondered
if the same concept could be used to make an economical ball turning attachment for the sieg.Next day set pencil to paper and decided YES
A bottom plate to bolt on to the top of cross slide with a pivot pin.A top plate to bolt on to the underside of the cross slide and a new toolpost that i was going to make to fit a parting tool and boring bar etc as previously mentioned and planned
It works well, cost was cheap and only took a few hours to make, will hopefully
now add photos. The basic design concept works well but i am already thinking mods.If anybody makes one please share any improvements

I am trying to post photos from phothttp://s1327.photobucket.com/user/bazmak47/media/1-ballturn_zpsbfe36bda.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0obucket but not having any success yethttp://s1327.photobucket.com/user/bazmak47/media/2-ballturn_zps7c8e4d28.jpg.html?sort=http://s1327.photobucket.com/user/bazmak47/media/2-ballturn_zps7c8e4d28.jpg.html?sort=3&http://s1327.photobucket.com/user/b...psd75f54de.jpg.html?sort=3&o=6o=543=2o=13&o=1

I have uploaded photos to photobucket and tried to put them with this thread
can anyone see them/if not please advise me what i am doing wrong
photobucket seems to have changed since i last posted images

Hi Baz,

I managed to get to see the pictures by getting into photo bucket first . Liked the the use of the compound slide. What suburb do you live? .

Hi Baz,

I don't use Photobucket but I can share how I post images, which should/may work for you.

On Imageshack I click the button to get the code to embed images. I copy and paste it into my post. Then I delete all the crud either side of the square brackets [] between the IMAGE tags. What's left displays the image once I hit preview or post.

Alternatively, you can use the feature on the menu bar of your compose message/reply screen where you should see an icon that looks like a picture of mountains. Click on that (it's insert image). Then enter the URL (http...blah, blah) of your image in the box that pops up. That should work but I don't use it for some reason that escapes me right now.

Great work on the ball turner. I'm almost about to have a go at making one myself.

Edit to add :

I opened one of your pics on Photobucket and saw on the RHS of the screen the IMG code. Clicked on that and it auto copied the code. Right clicked and pasted the code to this message and here is your pic. This is actually a lot easier than Imageshack, I might have to shift to Photobucket...

Thanks boys got most of the images which make it simple to understand.Possible improvements are
1/ use 5mm plate instead of 3.I used 3 so as not to raise the toolpost too much and reduce the tool centre height
but i made the addional toolpost out of 50sq x38lg steel and drilled on centre height from chuck.Ground a tool from a broken
centre drill and locked with a grub screw.Suggest use 5mm plt.Plan to bore i side of toolpost for boring bar and machine
1 side to accept a piece of parting off steel. Will also drill larger holes to suit different tools.Broken taps or cutters
2/will change the pivot point, relace the M6 stud with possibly a skatebearing
3/Plate shapes were guessed and can be improved
4/Plate tries to lift slightly when cutting but is earily held down for alum, dont know about brass yet
Overall the idea works well, but time will tell as i only made it a couple of hours ago will keep you posted
I am very please with the result but need a bit more finness.Anyone who makes it please let know
Not sure what results i will get but if i advance the cross slide past the pivot point and withdraw the tool/compound slide
it will cut a concave curve .I think. Also if i bring the pivot point well forward i should be able to cut a small radius on
the outside of a larger diameter.Like a handwheel.Comments please i may be rambling.Just got back from the Seacliff Pub

Back again.I had enough 30dia alum for 2 ball handles so decided to play about for a couple of hours
First thing was to redesign the pivot point. All explained in the attached photos.Cut 2 pieces x 35lg
Turned 12dia x 6 long and drillead and tapped M8 x 20 deep.Made a mandrel fron 12.7 dia and fitted
an M8 grub screw one end.Screw blank on and grip in 3 jaw.A large overhang is needed to clear headstock
when compound swings towards chuck. Also a bit fiddly with cross and compound handwheels almost
clashing, but no major aproblems.Made 1 ball full sphere 28 dia. The 2nd i played about with different
curves but in my opinion it worked out well.Simple and cheap to make,i would recommend to anyone
Never seen this before so i hope its my original idea and worth sharing. Regards Bazmak

I havent done ball turning before but this is what i learned doing this mod
Using cross slide set pivot point on lathe centre line for ball turning
With compound at right angle to lathe centre line, wind in until tool touches job
Using rack wind carriage clear swing compond 90o AC and using rack touch tool to end of work and lock carriage
Using compound turn ball, cutting travel i found easier towards headstock.

That's some fine looking work. :) I like the second handle you've shown. Very neat work.

Todd

thanks, its so simple to make and use im hoping for others to make it
and hopefully design will improve. Will have to get some brass and make some more
