sorry for a late reply its hard to trall though the post that i find relevent.
and i spose this isnt too relevent but still, our workshop is located directly behind 2 mechanics, one being a suspension specialist. most of the time were out seeing what we can use.
the shocker pistons we used to make some small tube and wire benders, the oil went into our oil heater or the tractor and i was taking all of the bearing to extract the balls for my pet cannon lol
Shockabsorber rods are usually made of SAE 1035 or EN8 and McPherson strut rods SAE 1042.
They are usually induction hardended to a skin depth of about 0.8mm and hard chrome plated or QPQ (Black) Nitrided.
If it's a chrome plated rod then the steel is generally of a very high quality ASTM cleanliness 3 surface condition "A" otherwise they have major pinhole problems with the chrome.
I worked for a shockabsorber company for a long time - responsible for rod production.
