Is memory wire cheating? It's kind of "fast attack, slow release" unless a source of cooling is available but otherwise could be something fun. It also works by putting a battery across it which heats it via internal resistance. There's some majique involved using heat but it can also be preformed to a particular shape to which it'll return as it cools. Hmmm ...counteracting springs? :)

I guess one could ask the same about a Bourdon tube ... Hmmm ...
