I just finished reading this post. http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/index.php?topic=863.msg5757;topicseen#msg5757

I have the option of getting an old Bridgeport at a good price and want to learn more about my power options.
1. My main concern is for tapping. I will need to use quick spindle reversal for tapping. This will be one of the more common operations done on this machine.
2. I have 220v single phase in my garage. I know when you go from 110v to 220v your amperage drawn is half. But what amperage will the phase converter draw? Will it be the same as the three phase motor on the machine?
3. So far I like the VFD that Wareagle wrote about in the above mention post but number one priority will be the ability to quickly stop and reverse the spindle.
4. This is the other option I am looking at. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130220829100&ssPageName=MERC_VI_RSCC_Pr4_PcY_BIN_Stores_IT&refitem=7514119887&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=active_view_item&usedrule1=StoreCatToStoreCat&refwidgettype=cross_promot_widget&_trksid=p284.m184&_trkparms=algo%3DDR%26its%3DS%252BI%252BSS%26itu%3DISS%252BUCI%252BSI%26otn%3D4
If I can't come up with something the option may be finding a smaller 220 single phase machine but there seems to be more 3phase machinery available to me at the time.

Thanks for the help.
Tim

I have a 3-phase Bridgeport in my garage, connected to a Phase-O-Matic. I have been using as you described for taping, Forward to instant reverse, no problems, been doing that since '86.

I have wanted a fixture plate for some time. I finally finished mine. I would love to see pics of attachments that others have made for theirs.
