Just been reading the post by Kvom called Building it, about his new workshop and machine acquisitions where he got a Bridgy and Monarch lathe. As some have posted the Monarch 10EE is the Rolls Royce of lathes and this post is for the Brits on the board mainly.

In the UK CVA copied the Monarch very closely see herehttp://www.lathes.co.uk/cva/index.html but the CVA in the UK doesn't enjoy the reputation the Monarch does in the US, no reason for it that's just the way it is.

Good thing though is it keeps prices down. If you go to an auction where there is a Colchester Student and a CVA the CVA will be lucky to fetch 1K whilst the Klunker Student with fetch up to 2 2-1/2K

If you have the room and can move one they are well worth getting, an advantage over the 10EE is the CVA was powered by a normal motor and gearbox in the base and will run off a VFD with no problems or even change to a single phase motor but a VFD is a lot kinder.

For anyone into screwcutting these are the dogs bollocks, they can cut from 2 tpi to 82 tpi with no gaps in the table

John,

I was looking at a Smart and Brown Lathe the other day, which looks a little similar, I had no intention of getting it, for reasons of both size and cost ............... but it did oooze quality
