I am building a GN cycle car engine with OHV conversion. What grade steel is best for rocker arms? The valve pads will need hardening.

I go to a site like Speedy Metals, then pick the material I want, ie: steel, then pick the various alloys available, the select the

Then I pick the material description/specification sheet, and look to see if the metal can be heat treated, welded, case hardened, look at the machinability percentage, and then look at strength.

I pick a material that has the right combination of features for my application.

I have started using some ground round steel, I think cold rolled, that still has good machineability.

I generally avoid using metals with low machineability, regardless of any other features the material may have.

I probably have a spreadsheet somewhere with the various metal types and their characteristics, but I don't recall where that is.
