I've been looking for an indexable face mill, about 2" in diameter, that will make it easier to get a good finish on Al and possibly cast iron and steel. The tricky part is that the largest straight shank my mill can hold is 1/2", or an MT2. It seems that this really limits my options. My machine has a 1HP milling motor.

There seem to be two main kinds of face mills; those that can cut into a corner, and those which can't. The latter mostly have disk-shaped inserts, which I assume will leave a better finish, but may require more power than my machine has. I haven't had a need yet for corner face-milling, so either type may work.

Does anyone know of a good face mill that won't break the bank, and can take a 1/2" or MT2 arbor? The only thing I've been able to find is this one on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/150776161219

Thanks!

I got the Glacern Fm-45
http://www.glacern.com/fm45

After talking with Sol at Glacern (I also have their 4" vise and drill chuck) I went with the 2". I'm using it on a Bf-20 mill (same as Grizzly G0704)
The finish on Al is spectacular. I had been using a fly cutter, ground per Bogs posts and got a very nice finish. This is worlds beyond that. And it will take 0.3 per pass for roughing (although the roughing passes look almost as good ad a finishing pass)
I have nothing but good stuff to say about the Glacern stuff.
I did find the inserts cheaper at Carbide Depot IIRC.
Whichever you get, you want a 45degree face mill for our size machines.

Best
