Has anyone built the "Thimble"?

Also, is it possible to hold square stock centered with a 3 jaw chuck?

Almost everyone.
Just kidding, but there are a lot of us! Search for "Rocker engine" or Rocking engine" here on the forum. You'll probably come up with 10 or so.

It is much better to hold square stock in a four jaw chuck, OK i know its a little time consuming clocking it up, but well worth the effort for good results.

Depending on what size square stock you are using you could use a square collet

A four jaw is best but if you don't have one, slit a piece of tubing with the ID close to the diagonal of the square stock and hold in a three jaw.
