I'm now looking at buying a Sieg 9x20 lathe. I would like to know which size cutting tools most of you who own similar size lathes are using, ie: 3/16", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", etc.?

Thanks,

Cliff.

Hi Cliff,
I own a Grizzly 9x20 and it will accomodate tools up to 1/2". However, I rarely use such a large toolbit. I use mostly 1/4" - 3/8" toolbits, smaller ones for closer work, larger ones for taking off more material. I'm becoming a great fan of the indexable tooling and I use that in the 3/8" size.

Cheers,
Phil

The 9 X 20 import lathes are actually designed to hold 10MM tools.
A 3/8 tool with a .030" shim under it seat the tip at .011" above
center. That set up cuts perfectly on my Grizzly 9 X 19 lathe.

Thanks for the great responses - just what I was looking for.

So, if I made a custom tool holder I could build in that ".030" shim" and make it even easier...?

Cliff.

one of the first upgrades that is typical is a quick change tool post these have built in height adjustment so no need for a shim if you go that route. If you do decide to make your own tool holders look at the ones Marv built.
