folks,

I intended to build the Stuart Steam Hammer this holiday, but have been thwarted by my lack of BA taps. So, I'll pick another project. :)

However, I need to purchase 2BA, 5BA, and 7BA taps to do this model. I entertained substituting, but decided I'd rather buy the taps and use the supplied nuts and bolts. The casting kit is dated 1975 and I reckon my Father never got around to it. The castings should be _well_ seasoned by now. :)

Would you all point me to a USA source for these taps?

Thanks,

- Reed

I could not find a seller in the U.S.. No market hear to speak of. Although I think Coles carried some B.A. carbon steel taps a while ago.Your best bet however is H.S.S..

I got my B.A. taps from this source in the U.K.. The shipping was very much like buying from a U.S. seller. They may be the same E-bay seller posted previously

Morrison Miniature Machines keep all the taps & dies you will need for stuart models. Both BA and ME threads for pipe fittings etc

That was quick! Thm:

John and MB both put me on the Proops site and they look to be a winner. The Morrison site is rather pricey in comparison even with the postage from the UK. :-( I get the set (3 carbon) for half the price of one tap at Morrison. Although Morrison does not describe whether their taps are HSS or carbon, carbon will suffice for this project.

Unfortunately Proops is on holiday until 04Jan10, <sigh> there always seems to be a price for not planning ahead. :-[

Thanks again,

- Reed

humm, I have oddles(hundreds) of USA made HSS NOS taps in the numbered sizes (it is a long story). If a member has a similar situation with BA taps, PM me for trading opportunities.

Guess I was lucky to have bought when I did...my taps/dies arrived today, just in time for me to make a start on my new steam engine over the holidays.....Weather permitting of course...its currently -2.0 C outside...brrrrr too cold for the shop

Once the holidays are over, I'll have several places to inquire.

Thanks again, - Reed
