    Paint job repair.(orange peel)

Thanks for the tips Dave. I did give it a go on a 1x1" patch underneath the bonnet, and to say it easy, I`m NOT doing that on a whole fender :) Think i`ll drive to the nearest city and look for a buff and some smoother sand papers. Should probably do the whole car while at it, will look awesome...

    Paint job repair.(orange peel)

Hi again folks, been a while. They don`t want anyone using the lathe at work for hobby projects, so i`m not able to keep practising atm :( Anyways, bought myself a new car, 86-Toyota MR2 last weekend, and tought i`d use this weekend to shape up the paint job. Unfortunatly, i live in a very...

    John-Tom Email

A small friendly note Gail, I think there are some spambots checking these pages once in a while, i got a spam related to machining a couple of days ago and this is the only part of the internet connecting me and machining. Just wanted to say that giving out others e-mails in a clear way like...

    Round headed bolts

I HATE rusted/stuck/round bolts!! When changing engine in my trackday car, i also wanted to change the differential. Turns out those bolts had been rusting the last 20years so all 4(!!) snapped with very little force, really annoying having 4 stuck bolts, under a car with no means of lifting...

    Anodising

Definitely going to try this some time! Well written. For a cheap PSU, go to the local electronics recycling station and pick up a old computer PSU. If lucky you can get them for free. 12V is on all the yellow wires, 5V on the red wires, black is ground. I have one of these driving my...

Grinding and polishing cast large(ish) aluminium air intake?

I`m far from done still, got to borrow some other sanding tools, but I do agree with you shedboy, never again. I don`t think i will finish this the way i planned due to too much work. I think I`ll grind away the casting surface, give it a rough sanding and paint it with rim paint. Maybe on the...

Grinding and polishing cast large(ish) aluminium air intake?

Thanks Jim, I do actually have some emery cloth, just that my experience with regular sanding paper is that it took too long, but i`ll give it a go and see, maybe the emery cloth will grind better :) I did give it a go with a steel brush on the angle grinder, but that cheap tool was so...

Grinding and polishing cast large(ish) aluminium air intake?

Hi again folks. I`m in the process of giving one of my car engines a little cleanup and shining. The one I am working on is a 2.0L Opel engine. It used to sit in a car i bought for trackday purpose, and i decided to shine up the engine before selling it. I did just get started on grinding down...

    Removing Rust from Steel Boilers

Phosphoric acid is also said to be a good alternative. I use it for disinfecting the brewery, on the bottle it says to use 30-40mL for 5L water when converting rust, acid concentration is 85%. It is also the reason why coca cola works for rust removal :)

    Man is hobby machining addictive!

Not sure if renting is the right word, it`s a community shop where anyone with a membership may use the equipment for a small charge. It is a really small community (50 people at most) which came together and built a garage. Thanks on the kind comment on the nozzle, i`m really pleased with it...

    Man is hobby machining addictive!

At 5$/hour this is gonna get expensive, spent 2,5hours at the lathe today making a nozzle for a rocket engine. Got little curlies in my hair after the tool popped while parting the piece, i guess 6mm square tool blanks is nor ideal for parting:P Will have to look into getting my own lathe one...

    HPI Baja 5b SS Kit

Very nice! I just love anything remote controlled. I do have an old kyosho asphalt racer lying around, engine is working but need new gears. Also remember a really old model we had, with a manual 10-speed planetary gearbox with reverse. It was a nice looking Nissan terrano scale model. Great...

General turning, some questions from a newbie.

I did try with just one active roller, but got no grip against the grains. So added that o-ring just to give a little bit of pull on the other roller, works good. Did rethread the rollers, now one have a right hand, and the other one got a left hand thread on it, i think it works better than...

General turning, some questions from a newbie.

Found a solution for getting drive on both rollers, just put a O-ring around one of them, the friction is enough to pull grain trough :) Will mount a motor if i find it takes too long time cranking it by hand. Would have been cool with a steam engine :D Thanks for the help and tips guys...

General turning, some questions from a newbie.

I`ll have to see how i could get both rollers driven, i don`t have much equipment besides the lathe, so making my own gears is basically a no go. The cross threading is not very visible, but there is both left and right hand grooves in both rollers. Will make them deeper as they is no more than...

General turning, some questions from a newbie.

I did turn it without support, but as you mentioned, 3 times the diameter is ok unsupported, my diameter was 19mm, length less than 50mm except one of the shafts(75mm), but that one is for mounting a handle so not critical. The swarf is much like you describe, more continuous than short, but i...

    Yale Lab accident?

I can easily imagine such a tragedy happening on the university where i studied. First of, there is alot of mo***ns thinking they know everything and lacking respect for machinery. Second, the lab personal was very "kind". I remember once i was asking their help for turning a propeller clock on...

General turning, some questions from a newbie.

Hi picclock. Yeah it is great to have such a shop so close, even if it is kind of expensive. About 8USD/hour. And toolbits, drills and such is personal items(understandably). The rollers was just slim enough to pass trough the headstock, and it seems like 50x19mm gives little enough flex that...

    Help me upgrade my ignition!

Just want to add that the typical way of protecting electronics like this, is "snubber" diode, or flyback diode which is the more correct term. For a circuit like this, two diodes may be added, one parallel with the coil, and one with the transistor. Also as mentioned, a zener diode could be...

General turning, some questions from a newbie.

I`ll keep you posted mate :) Took some pictures of the lathe and how it was set up, but cant find the cable to the camera, so snapped a couple of the rollers with the phone, better than nothing... I`ll post more pictures when the cable shows up ;) Edit: The lathe is made by Vöerst, looks...
