Is there anybody on here who can help produce some castings?

Rob, Did you produce the flywheel castings for Tony Muir's traction engine on the mamodforums? At present I'm just trying to get an idea of the cost of the parts and get some idea if it would be possible to have these castings made. Can I email you some drawings of the parts I'm thinking...

Is there anybody on here who can help produce some castings?

Over at the Mamod Forum (www.mamodforums.co.uk) I've been involved in a group build loco project, at present the project is in the design phase, prototyping some components and testing stages. The loco is 16mm scale and will require a custom smokebox casting and a small number of lost wax...

Can anyone offer a machining service for small batch runs of parts?

No worries, I'm open to suggestions, thats one of the main reason for posting in the first place, all good advice too. Stainless steel axles would seem like a good idea, although I normally make sure everything is oiled prior to a run. I've actually got a PM from one of the members on here who...

    I need another workbench

Blimey I missed seeing that bench varnished - that's one lovely looking bench top! Personally I worry If I put a scratch on my £35 quid hollow desk top that also works as my workbench! Best Thing I made is a big tray so if I mess up a days work I can go hide it all in one go and have a nice...

Can anyone offer a machining service for small batch runs of parts?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but here goes! I've got a few ideas about developing a small 16mm Garden Railway Loco, in between myself and a model engineering laser company, and buying off the shelf parts, I'll need some parts turned on a lathe. It would be very small...

    I need another workbench

These are a nice solid and easy to use fixing for constructing workbenches: http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=364429&name=dowel&user_search=1&sfile=1&jump=12 You can also save a few quid and make them yourself too. The good thing about these is if they loosen up, you can always snug...

Workshop math for setting up a ball turning attachment

A picture paints 1000 words: I'm turning some ball ended handrail brackets and need to work out the value of "z" where "x" and "y" are known dimensions! What would be the formula for working it out? :-\

Small Batch runs of white metal or brass castings...

I've got some model railway parts that I need to get some castings made of. I need lots of them, I don't mind making 4 or so but axle boxes and brake blocks I need dozens of! These are all 16mm:ft stuff so thumbnail sized bits! Can anyone recommend a shop (in the UK) who will make the moulds...

Lathe and Mini Mill - Spare Belts - Getting an order together for UK Users

If you want to do an order from the US - can you get the items shipped to a friendly forum member in the US and then get them to send them on to your UK address as a gift? Royal Mail really fleece you with the extra £8 they charge for the so called handling fee. Even if it's just £8 VAT and...

Keyless or not, that is the question

Go for a keyless chuck. I've got an 1/2" capacity LFA industrial keyless chuck on my drill press and a 3/8" capacity Jacobs chuck on my Lathe and they are far nicer to use than the old keyed chucks.

    Live centres

I'd steer clear of the cheap Chinese or Indian live centres...those are the ones that sound like a pepper mill when you turn them by hand... :D

    Saftey Glasses

At the school I work, we purchased some wrap around safety glasses as they are a little more trendy than the old ones. The kids like to wear them - all the time, apart from when they are actually using any machinery! Have to constantly remind them and get the expected huff and puff in response...

    Saftey Glasses

I was using my lathe yesterday, wearing goggles and still a piece of hot swarf went into my eye. It hurt like sticking needles in your eye! I think the swarf just bounced off my eye and must have burnt a little as the soreness took a good 24 hours to go away... Full face shield next time! :D

    Harrogate 2008 show photo's

I drove up from Essex (191 miles), it took 4 hours and about fifty odd quid for the petrol. I did make a weekend of it though and stayed overnight in Harrogate and visited Harlow Carr and popped into the National Railway Museum in york on the sunday too! Lovely part of the world though although...

    Sherline Chuck?

You can buy a set of optional Soft Aluminium Jaws for the Sherline chuck. It comes with a set of hardened steel jaws which should give more purchase but I agree that you can't get much holding force using the two tommy bars. Alan

    Sherline Chuck?

What about a Bison Chuck? Much more precise than Sherline chucks, with more gripping power too. And of course a much bigger pricetag too! http://www.brassandtool.com/Chucks-Lathe.html
