fixing up old iron - removing name plate rivets

Some drive rivets are hard and a punch or drill bit can slip off and make a oops. A method that can work if you have a welder handy. Take a strip of metal and drill a hole that is smaller then the rivet head. Hold the hole in the metal tight against the rivet head and do a quick tack weld...

Fuel at shows - containers and delivery

Ordered and received the Trangia fuel bottle. Nice fuel bottle and like the vent and pouring is done without having to remove the top. The HDPE is good for alcohol fuel. The Swiss made fuel bottle does not have the UL label. For indoor use would prefer a bottle that doesn't melt at under 300...

Fuel at shows - containers and delivery

A little searching and found aluminum fuel container with epoxy lining that should work for methanol. http://www.campmor.com/optimus-4l-small-fuel-bottle.shtml Not sure if UL approved but would prefer over a plastic container.

Fuel at shows - containers and delivery

Have been using the aluminum backpackers fuel bottles for years. Never had any problems with lantern type fuels like Coleman or pump gasoline. Year or so ago started adding methanol to my lantern (naphtha) fuel and was happy with lot cleaner burning fuel. Started having problems with a white...

    Stirling displacer, copper end thoughts

Good point. Could make copper say about .030 or .040" thick with grooves for more surface area?

    Stirling displacer, copper end thoughts

Working on a Stirling hot air engine. Making a displacer out of .018" thick stainless steel rolled into a tube. Diameter about 2.5" and about 10" long. If the hot end of the displacer had a silver brazed on copper end about 1/8 thick would it be a good or bad idea? Thinking it would make for...

Could that be rosin and not tar that is used?

    Hand Stamped Labels

There was plans published in an old Home Shop Machinist magazine for a spring loaded stamper for use in the mill by Glenn Wilson. It works fairly good but requires adjusting of the stamps so all the bottom of the letters fall on the same line by removing metal on side of some of the stamps or...

Bad timing, bad valve, bad luck

Wasn't all bad luck. The gouge in cylinder cleaned up and little if any loss in compression also no damage to valve seat. Only had to make new valve. Looking at pictures of full size engine they did use double nuts. Plan on using something like small cotter pin for insurance and not waiting...

Bad timing, bad valve, bad luck

Just finished Root & Vandervoort model hit n' miss. After much cranking it started for first time and reved up then a stop with a bang. Valves are held on with a nut and the nut came loose on intake valve and was inhaled into cylinder. Ding, Dang why did it have to wait until starting to come...

what home made machines have you made?

Swede, I'm only a wannabe engraver. The angled and other markings on the brass were done on little home built cnc. Sure wish knew how Hardinge did their markings but don't. I cheated and printed on paper and taped over with clear packing tape. A groove was cut in the OD so this paper covered...

what home made machines have you made?

Made clamp to hold swing arm parallel to small gear motor Tried copying GRS system for holding engravers. Shaft sticks higher then first plate and other grinding/honing plates can just sit there and are driven by friction.

    Henry Ford Engine

Some thoughts Did I hear a buzz coil buzz a fair amount past top center? If using a buzz coil it fires when points first close and not when points open like on a regular ignition. Seems like either the flywheel is a little light or there is a friction or binding problem or lack of compression...

    Marvelous Marv's backbone tool

Built one of Marv Klotz's backbone tools for Dremel that he showed us. Had to do a trim cut a piece of .008" feel gauge today and needed the cut to come out close to what had marked out and not distort the feeler gauge. Marv's tool worked slick, Thanks for sharing Marv. Gary

    1/6 Galloway engine

George, just an idea. Not sure if it would help. Jerry Howell used to say most carburetor problems are ignition. I wonder if a set up like Bob Shores described in his book "Model Ignition..." for testing spark on a high tension ignition would work for testing igniter ignition. It is a...

    Unable to see some pictures.

Some pictures don't show up for me and some do. Guessing the pictures that don't appear are attachments. In Steamin's last post in "Boiler Build For American LaFrance Engine" he describes pictures but I don't see any. Have tried several different changes in Internet Explorer 8 security...

    Beading /swage

No plans but kind of description of one built years ago. The used gears are from a large hydraulic pump, guessing from a dump truck. The gears need to have kind of deep teeth for clearance for the pivoting. The frame was cut from steel plate. The bearings are bronze bushings and the bearing...

    "Mystery Engine Breathes Flames"

Don, thanks for showing your engine. I like the "hood" for protecting the flame from draft. Plan on copying your design. I've been using alcohol, Heet Gasoline Antifreeze. Can buy it at auto parts store for under $2 and it burns clean and don't seem to deposit any soot inside cylinder. Don...
