    copper based solder?

There are silver-phos brazing alloys also and they definitely shouldn't be used on boilers.

    Silver braze/solder

Try this website there is a lot of tech info on solder there. May have strength comparisons. Usually for models the silver content is near 50%. Easyflow #2 (England 42%) or Easyflow 45 (North America 45%). The trick to a good silver braze job is the right flux and how to use it...

    beginner wondering about lathes

From the '30 onward the only lathe that most people could afford was the Good old Atlas (also sold under other names like Craftsman by Sears) lathe. Most farms where likely to have one and so did many homes. It was an useful machine in this environment but it had many faults like die cast parts...

Klingerite or klingersil the first is the older type with asbestos (be careful with it, you can cut it but don't break it up or grind on it) and the latter doesn't contain any it is silica based, supposedly safe????? I cant say what would be good for an engine, ask the supplier or go to a small...

    Future Shock

You think it's bad for people today, what about years ago. My Grandmother grew up on a farm where you only got to town, less then 10 miles away, 3 or 4 times a years because that was an all day trip on a horse pulled wagon. The first world war had been on for 3 months before they heard about...

    Converting PDF to cad(ALIBRE)

Even if you can get a program to do it , it might not be what you want. A PDF doesn't have all the info in it that a CAD drawing does so it might not come out the way you want.

    Converting PDF to cad(ALIBRE)

Look around the web for CAD file conversion programs (maybe free). There are some that convert cad to PDF's, there may be some that do what you want.

Bought a new vise at Cabin Fever

I did run the indicator up and down the jaw face, it was about .00005" out until it was near the bottom and then it jumped to almost a thou. Still pretty good. I redid the fixed jaw test by putting the indicator against the outboard end of the fixed body not the jaw and this time it only flexed...

Bought a new vise at Cabin Fever

Are You Ashamed of Where You Live?

Many people have reasons why they don't put down there location. It may be that they are just a very private person or even paranoid of "bad " people finding them. Whatever the reason it is ther choice and we should respect that. Remember if you make assumptions on why some people don't do...

    Measuring Instruments

If the Starrett tools are more then 25 years old and in good (still accurate) condition then they are the best you can get. The newer stuff not so much. They have had to make economy model to compete just like they other instrument companies and some of their stuff, that we can afford for a...

    The great oil debate!

It seems strange that you can't find it here because they make it at the refinery in Sarnia, Ontario. Any Esso agent (not gas stations but bulk suppliers and farm agents) should be able to get it for you. You can call the Esso help line or go online http://map.essolubes.ca/locator.php and...

    Technical Drawing/Drafting Software

Most home shop people can't afford the really good programs like Inventor and Solidworks so they use the free versions of Alibre and Sketckup (google) for 3D and for 2D there is a free program from Solidedge which is as good as there is in that type.

    For that Serve

Lard...uuumh Tasty. It is still just as good as it once was and in some ways it is better then the modern oils but there is the smell factor, if you don't get it all cleared away it will go rancid The sulphurized cutting oil is great for most applications but be careful to clean it up it can...
