    Pamper those tools and instruments...

Thanks for the comments everyone. The hydrocarbon propellant is present at first, otherwise the foam is polyurethane and just as inert as the varnish on your wooden tool box. It is not exposed to UV Again, the foam is polyurethane. It does not easily soften in petrol but acetone is a solvent...

How dopey is this traction engine project?

Thanks for that information Jason, I will check out the tractiontalkforum directly. Yes, I can see it might be quite a challenge to make something recognisable as a super model of a Mamod!

How dopey is this traction engine project?

OK Jason, I did a bit of searching and found a wealth of stuff related to the Minnie, thanks. Now then, back to the Mamod. It would be interesting to know how the total number of Mamod traction engine made compares with the makers of any full size machines? I suspect it would show up very well...

How dopey is this traction engine project?

Thanks MB, a steampowered bicycle is on the list although I cannot guarantee it will ever get any further than that! :D

How dopey is this traction engine project?

I would like to build a mobile steam machine but not too small, something that I can drive or ride around a little. Steam bicycle, steam buggy, maybe. However what I would really like to do is a traction engine but the projects I see on line have taken their makers decades and the kits of...

has anyone made a lathe brake and coolant pump?

Bogs, mine came "pre-adjusted" from the factory! When threading I can touch the brake pedal which kills the motor then it coasts for a turn or two until I press harder to stop right on target. New_Guy, I have seen an effective brake made by tensioning a piece of 'vee belt' over a pulley.

I had a visitor to my shop...

Bentprop, we are going to Ashburton which is supposed to be on 200' of gravel but when I see pictures of what showed up north of the Rakaia River I less than comforted by that! However, we are now on a cliff top in Wellington so just about anywhere (except Auckland or Taupo!) will be better if...

Building a Quick Change Gear Box, need help.

A compound gear is an intermediate gear which is comprised of two gears locked together on the same bearing. The most common compound gears are those that convert metric to imperial pitches etc, for example a compound gear set of 127T and 120T. There is a better explanation here...

Silly boy almost broke his lathe!

I failed to tighten the four sided tool post and the tool swung to get firmly wedged against a chuck jaw with the drive belt squealing! :P No external evidence of damage to the internals of the gear box. :-\

Building a Quick Change Gear Box, need help.

The ratio between the spindle gear and the leadscrew gear is what sets the pitch of threads when you are cutting them and the speed of the carriage movement when you are turning using the feed screw for horizontal feed. With a spindle gear of 40t and a 12TPI lead screw you could divide 480 by...

Congratulations to the September Project of the Month Winner

Congratulations Steve, it is a really beautiful piece of work which I have enjoyed reading of throughout its construction. .... and the fact that it runs, what more can I say!

    rubber under lathe feet?

I guess I am the odd one out here but this is what I did with my 12x36. The stands are bolted down to the wooden feet and the only levelling I have done has been with a builder's level.

    Here's One For You...

We had been trying to solve their problem for some days via emails and everything indicated that the cables were in the wrong holes. Several times we sent messages such as "Make sure cable number one is in the first socket" etc. The device (a VSAT Mux) had eight sockets and the first four were...

    A new Lathe?

PeeWee, I bought a lathe that is the same as the Chester Crusader. It had been on the shop floor for a long time and I never expected to buy anything so big but when I got talking about the smaller machines on offer the Crusader-clone with a bit of discount became very attractive. I have not...

    ply lining garage

This is true Stan but for condensation to deposit moisture there must be a surface that is below the dew point, except of course where the humidity is 100% and you have fog indoors! It is my belief that putting insulation outside of a concrete, brick or other 'massive' structure would use the...
