I failed to tighten the four sided tool post and the tool swung to get firmly wedged against a chuck jaw with the drive belt squealing! :p

No external evidence of damage to the internals of the gear box. :-\

:'( I have done that! Actually, when I bought my lathe I considered the belt drive to be a bonus safety feature.

When I bought my mill, the local advice was to get a belt driven machine to minimise damage when things go wrong. No gearbox to wreck too.

I've done that on an industrial scale.

Forgot to tighten up the tool post bolts on a 1½" X 1½" shank turning tool.
At first I was wondering why it wasn't cutting, then it took a
BIG BITE!

It's good for testing the old cardiovascular system... ;)

We all do things like that at some time.
The old leather flat belt drive on my 4 ½” Southbend lathe is good for slipping the belt off the pulley if you jam things up. It in affect removes the driving power to the chuck, so protecting the user.

I keep telling everyone to invest in brown cordoroy trousers for wearing while machining.

It saves having to stop work when something silly like that happens.

You are not the first John, and I can guarantee you won't be the last.

As long as you are OK, you have learned a good lesson.
