When I received my Stuart casting set for their ST oscillator, about 8 years ago, I failed to realize that the
kit did not contain their "Oakenstrong" gasket material called for in the instructions. Well, I started machining
about a week ago and now need the gaskets.

Stuart is in the middle of an ownership transfer and their email has failed (bounced) several times.

I would like to know how thick this "Oakenstrong" gasket material is so I can improvise or purchase an
equivalent material locally.

Help!!!

Thanks,
Pete

I have some that I ordered from them fairly recently. The micrometer puts it at about 0.009" thick (dry, before use). I think fairly heavy brown paper would work almost as well.

Hello Pete, you can use material cut from a brown shopping bag, provided the stores in your area still even use such things anymore ;D. For your application you will only require a very small piece. After cutting them out, lightly soak them in vegetable oil and then wipe them as 'dry' as possible to remove any excess and you are good to go.

Thanks guys, that's what I need to know. I have the engine running on air last night. Need to make it
air tight now with the gaskets.

Thanks again,
Pete

Pete,

Just to explain not only to yourself, but other members that come across the same situation.

I used to refurbish a fair few live steam engines made by other people, and original thickness gasket material was either no longer measurable or available.

The plans usually allow for this, and unless it is say a high performance i/c engine, then gasket thickness can be almost anything within reason, from basically zero thickness using liquid gasket (a thing I personally don't like) to 0.025" thick, oil soaked card.

I use PTFE sheet nowadays, almost exclusively, for all my gasket needs, they can be re-used over and over again.
