My old vice soft jaws were looking a bit worse for wear so it was time to replace. I was over at a mate’s shed the other week and spied his soft jaws and decided to copy them.

Started with 10mm x 25mm aluminium stock, milled out 2.5mm deep cutout into rear of jaws, leaving a 2mm lip on the top. Then plunged a 10mm pocket for neodymium magnets. I used 5 min epoxy to glue in the magnets.

I used some pretty small magnets I had on hand but I’m not sure they are strong enough to stop the jaws getting knocked out of position when in use. If so, I will replace them with some larger ones.

Hi,

Aren't you a bit worried about inducing some magnetism into the steel jaws? Trying to get iron filings off a magnetized tool can be a pain.
