Stainless steel is required for a piston rod...to prevent corrosion.

What grade of SS should be used?

TIA...John

I have made a few out of 316 because it is what I had in stock they have worked perfectly well.

Hi,

303 stainless steel would be my choice as it is free machining and ...well stainless!

Buy the TGP in the size you need and your half way there.

316 is tougher to get a good finish....and 304 is just miserable...

303 ss is easier to machine then 316. The higher the number in 300 series ss the tougher it gets to machine. Don't be fooled about an "L" in the ss designation, it does not mean lead, it's the grade you need if your going to weld it.
Good luck.
