I am building Jan Ridders Simple 2-Stroke engine seen here...http://heetgasmodelbouw.ridders.nu/Webpaginas/pagina_tweetakt_motor/tweetakt_frameset.htm

I have am pretty confident about the machining (although, some of it will be undoubtedly challenging), but the ignition is way out of my realm. I was hoping that someone from this site could point me in the right direction. I want to be able to recharge the battery without taking the engine apart. John from the Start Model Engineering website is building one shown here...http://start-model-engineering.co.uk/2010/11/jan-ridders-simple-two-stroke/simple-two-stroke-4/, but even though he kind of spells out what he did, it's still not dumbed down enough for me. Perhaps there's another topic that someone could send me the link for which would apply here. I could really use some trusted websites for the electrical materials too - like switches, a coil, etc.

I am really excited because I know there is a lot to learn here, I just need a little push. After all, we really don't learn unless we're a little out of our league anyway, right? Thank you so much for your thoughts and ideas.

dmp,
One of the most popular ignition system is from:
http://cncengines.com/ic.html

They don't use part numbers, but if you scroll down to the "Complete CDI Ignition System" which is about the 6th item down in the left hand column you will find what is almost a plug and play ignition system with a Hall efect pickup so no points would need to be built. I can also be used with points if desired by getting the two wire Futabel Connector in the right hand column.

A number of them have been used on IC models here on HMEM so there is lots of help available here if necessary. Also the owner/distributor is very helpful if necessary. The documentation that comes with the unit is a little bit sparse but not much is needed. I am using two of them myself.

The wiring harness has a separate changing connector so nothing has to be unplugged to charge the battery. Just plug the charger in.
