I have a real problem with slotting screws. The biggest issue is I have no
idea how. My manual jewelers saw method rarely ends up on
center.

I've looked at slitting saws but have never bought one to try it.
Anyone have any experience with them?

A slittling saw is not tough to use. On a screw you would just go slow and easy. On deep cuts with a thin blade I make many passes of .025" or so.

Spin it slow and keep oil on it.

If you wanted a fly cutter could cut the screw slot if you grind a tool for it.

i use a length of square stock in 4 jaw face off drill and tap and clearance drill to suit the bolt you are making so the back of the head is ages the square stock
clamp holder in tool post on centre
screw in the bolt
feed in using the cross slide
zero the cross slide
back off
screw in the next bolt in to zero and keep going

that's how i make them anyway

I was making a valve rod tonight that called for a 1/16" wide x 13/64" deep
slot. I decided to do a little experimenting with that I have on hand.
I chucked a Dermel cut off disk arbor up in the mini-mill.

At 2500RPM and .050" depth of cut it worked perfectly on the brass.
I beleive it would work on a shallow screw slot in steel as well.
You wouldn't want to forget the safety glasses for this process.
When those little disks fail they do go flying.
