Hi guys and gals,
I'm half way through making Elmer's beam engine and would like to run it on steam.

Will I need to change the timing by shifting the holes in the cylinder towards the mid stroke more, or will it run just fine with the holes at TDC and BDC?

If they should be moved, are there any tips or formula to guide me on how far.

From other posts, I understand that steam is an expansive gas and air is not.

The steam source will be the same as an old Meccano type boiler that has a wobbler on it . I plan to make a second boiler and not fiddle with the one I already have. More research for boiler making coming up for me I think.

I found a picture on the net the same as the one I have.

Hi Major
General Public here ;D
Elmer's engines where all designed to run on steam so I'm inclined to say just do it the way the master says. I can't see any reason to change anything regardless of using steam or air.
Welcome to the forum ( don't think i said hello when you joined)

Kind regards

Malcolm

Thanks Malcolm,
It's good to hear that it will run on steam and air. I'll leave the design be.
Cheers
