    Alibre Version12

I started with BobCad and that's all I'll say about that. I just ordered an integrated 4th axis from Tormach and needed to update my software. The Tormach crew recommends Alibre for CAD and SprutCam for CAM. They think this is the most cost effective route to end up with 4th axis and lathe...

    Preamble to a Stirling

I don't have a lathe so I'm stuck with the Mill Success today! It's round (a first)! It has a decent finish, on the outer section, done with a fly cutter (a first)! It has a chamfered radius (a first)! All this learned right here... No bandaids No broken tools No drama Less than 1 hour to...

    Preamble to a Stirling

What does "tumble" mean? Oh Boy this feels like a stupid question:)

    Preamble to a Stirling

How would I get a smooth finish on the face of the spokes? I can't get a fly cutter in there. Would this be done on a lathe?

    Preamble to a Stirling

My first attempt at a metal flywheel It turned out OK but I'll do better. I mounted a lathe chuck on a piece of aluminum. I then clamped the setup to the mill table and used that to hold the stock. I think my problem was due to centering. The first side turned out OK but the flip side is off...

    Ball Bearings,shaft, and carriers

According to the info in the above link, the bearing would be the same size as the carrier and the shaft. To make them fit don't the sizes need to be slightly different? Thanks!

    Ball Bearings,shaft, and carriers

My plans call for a shaft with a 5mm diameter. The carrier the bearing sets in also has a diameter of 5mm. A 11 X 5/4 bearing is spec'd. Is the following correct about bearings? 11 = the diameter the bearing will fit in 5 = the diameter the shaft/axle should be 4 = the width of the bearing...

    Preamble to a Stirling

Tormach CNC Mill Experience level: none I want to build a Stirling. I've got the plans from Jan Ridders and the more I looked at them the more I realized how much I don't know. I decided to start with Machinists wax and post the process here in hopes I will hear a better way of doing things...

    Fly cutting

Lew, The long boring picture story:) Many forums don't allow you to load the pictures on their server. This takes bandwidth and cost's money. So you link to your pictures. One option is www.photobucket.com You can setup an account for free and load a few pictures. For a fee you can load all...

    Fly cutting

Lew, I'm beginning to understand, I found a wikipedia article on rake and clearance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tool_bit What is an off-hand grinder. I have a "bench grinder" (one grinding wheel and one wire brush). I also have a couple of dremel style tools. Thanks for your patience!

    Fly cutting

I found a picture of one. It appears the inserts give you three cutting faces per insert? With this setup I would just need to make sure the shank fits my mill.

    Fly cutting

Experience Level: Beginner I have a Tormach cnc mill and I want to try fly cutting some aluminum for a great finish. I have a 1/2" set screw tool holder for the Mill. I'm thinking I need these two items: http://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=1152...

    Cooling fins on a mill

Hi Guys and thanks for all the ideas? I'm a software developer by trade and a tinkerer by passion. Several months ago I got my hands on a Tormach 1100 and I'm having a blast destroying Aluminum. I use a CAD program called BobCad but I intend to start writing my own G code soon. I know very...

    Cooling fins on a mill

I drank too much Stirling kool-aid and now feel the need to build one. I don't have a lathe but I have a cnc mill. I want to build the Jan Ridder Bas design that has aluminum cooling fins. I have many questions as I'm not a Machinist. Is there anything wrong with turning the mill into a...
