Need some help with a PMR #5 Bottle Engine

Being stubborn and dense, I decided it was time to take on an engine from castings. I bought the PM Research #5 Coke bottle engine set, and now I am lost........ I figure the best place to start is fly cutting the frame base to be flat and square. To do this I have a 9x36 mill and a Southbend...

    Repost of EZ Engine

I had a member wanting to see the EZ Engine that I had built. The images in the build thread have been deleted so I am reposting some pics of the engine here. Sadly the little guy has been sitting on the back of the work bench neglected, I do have plans to polish it up....some day.

If anyone needs to borrow this tool....

I came across a unique tool yesterday at the local pawn shop, and to help pay back the forum members for all their help I thought it would be nice to loan the tool out to who ever may need it. It is a quality Japanese made wood auger in 4/16" diameter. You know, when a 1/4" hole is just a bit...

Would this fly wheel work on Elmer's Fancy?

Would a fly wheel made like the drawing below have enough mass to work on Elmer's Fancy engine? The fly wheel would be 1.25" diameter and .312" thick made of 416 stainless steel. I have a bit of a demented project in mind and wanted to check before I got to far into it. :D Thanks

Difficulty in building an Elbow engine

Finishing up my first engine build which was the EZ engine, and now I am looking for the next project. The Elbow engine has caught my eye and I was wondering how difficult it was to build. How finicky are these engines to make them work? Does it require close tolerance or can there be a bit of...

How do you protect the polished metal?

From what I gather from reading this forum, once the mchining is finished, and all the chips are swept up, late that night the Bling fairy appears and the little engine is made all bright and shiny.... So how do you perserve the Bling fairy's work? For example polished brass parts, do you use a...

    Not-So EZ Engine Build

I have been reading the forum for awhile and finally decided to try a build. The EZ engine plans looked about my speed so I thought I would give it a try. I had bought a 10" piece of 1/4" x 2" flat steel stock to use for the base and upright. I wanted to use aluminum but there is no local supply...

    Height gauge question

I just got my order in from Shars for a 9x12 surface plate and a 6" dial height gauge, and to be brutally honest I am confused. The height gauge has a "wedge type" carbide point, can this be used to scribe a layout line or is it just there to eliminate wear on the contact point? I have heard of...

    Jan Ridders Bobber Stirling Engine

Not much to post, I had some nice "action" shots of the milling, but the computer died taking the pictures with them. I started with the engine base, made out of .5" (12.7mm) aluminum. Used a flycutter to even out the flat surfaces, and then squared the edges with an end mill. Being clever I...

Has anyone built the Jan Ridder Bobber?

I am getting started building Jan Ridder's stirling Bobber engine. Yes, it is probably not the best engine to start out on, but one benifit of being dumb is not knowing when you are in over your head. I was wondering if any members here have built or have experience with this engine design...

    Another wannabe machinist checking in

Just wanted to say hi from the middle of no where USA. Just found this forum and it is a wealth of information, not to mention the talent of the members. I am just a "trial and error" heavy on the error self-taught machinist. Have a small 11'x15' shed with a 1960's model South Bend 9A lathe...
