A question regarding Solid State Ignitions

Perhaps I am mistaken but to me electronic ignition modules are a form of amplifier, if that is so, would DC to DC Solid State relays work as an electronic ignition module to fire an ignition coil perhaps with a capacitor similar to a points system. These relays can be purchased for un $20.00...

Another Farm Boy running with video link.

Farm Boy running The above link will take you to a video of my recently completed Farm Boy. Really enjoyed building this model and giving thought to building something similar in a vertical configuration. Sorry the video is kinda jerky, hopefully I will be able to produce something better...

    Jerry Howell Buzz ignition.

I am having problems with my Jerry Howell buzz ignition and have two questions. Can I test the ignition board without using a hall sensor, ie jumper from the + to the hall input connection? I appear to be burning up hall sensors, what would cause this? Colin

    Coil polarity question

I have been given (2) 12A366 ignition coils to rub my Farm Boy hit & miss engine. These coils are exactly like the one shown in the link below. Is the polarity of the coil critical and if so, how do I tell which terminal is positive. It's about -8 Celcius here in southern Ontario with an...

    Farm Boy guidance please!

My recently completed farm Boy hit and miss engine stubbornly refuses to run longer than about 45 seconds, starting is achieved by placing my thumb over the air intake and varying the amount of air that I allow past. When the engine is started RPM increases for about 20 seconds then diminishes...

    Engine muffler

As I am nearing completion of a "Farm Boy" hit and miss engine, I find myself looking at mufflers the most popular one and certainly the most appealing to me is made using what looks like two small shallow dishes bolted rim to rim. Does anyone have any information on these mufflers as I have...

    Cylinder head gasket

With nearing completion of a Farm Boy Hit & Miss engine I will soon need a cylinder head gasket, what material and method of construction do you find work best for this gasket? Thanks in advance, Colin

Keeping 01 free of carbon buildup while hardening.

Is there any way of preventing the back carbon coating ones gets on steel (01) when heat treating it? pretty sure I saw something about a coating you could apply but cannot find anything about it or if it even exists. McMaster Carr has a product but it appears to be more for case hardening...

    Inductive proximity for ignition.-

I am considering using a small inductive proximity switch on the Farm Boy engine I am currently building. If I were to do this, would I need any additional amplification to drive an ignition coil? Thanks in advance. Colin

    Torch for silver solder.

Planning ahead on my "Farm Boy" build, I plan on using silver solder to assemble the crankshaft, will I be able to do this with a regular propane torch or move up to something larger? Oxy acetylene would obviously best but I don't really want to go there. I will be procuring some fire bricks...

    SolidWorks 2012 on Win 10

My tried and tested HP Elitebook running SolidWorks 2012 on Windows 7 Pro is getting rather tired so its time to update to a Windows 10 machine. My question to all the computer pundits is will I have any problems running a 2012 SolidWorks version on a windows 10 machine. I have done some...

    ME beam engine

Am considering purchasing castings etc. to build the ME beam engine (yes I know its been built a 1,000 times before but not by me). There appears to be two sources of castings, A.J. Reeves and Brunell, does anyone have input on who supplies the best castings? Thanks in advance. Colin

    Dividing head missing parts

I have a Rockwell dividing head very similar to the one in the image. Unfortunately the parts that causes friction between the indicator arms and the dividing head are missing so although they are at the correct spacing they never hold position. using a little clamp works to a degree...
