Accessing HMEM from mobile browser suggestion

A suggestion to the folks that do a bang-up job on this site. Thm: Since more and more of us are using smartphones to access HMEM from a mobile browser (e.g. iPhone, Android, etc) it's clunky at best to see the site on a tiny screen as there is no mobile version of the site. There's a nice...

    Millie steam engine & video

Here's my version of "Millie" that I finished a couple of months ago. Millie is a single-acting oscillator or "wobbler" engine. Runs like a champ in either direction using about 10-15psi from a small paint brush compressor. The frame is 1-1/4" high, flywheel is 3/4" diameter, pistion is 1/8"...

Cheap tool failure ..... get what you pay for.

I wasn't sure whether to put this here or in the tools section. I had 2 cheapy angle grinders I had bought from a local hardware store 5 or 6+ years ago. I'm sure they were junkie Chinese ones, especially given the $15/each cost :P ::) Not from Horror Freight, but they probably carry the same...

    Carbide bits/end mills and lubrication

More of a newbie question, but that's why we're here !! I've used carbide bits on the lathe on aluminum without any kind of cutting/lubrication oil. Now I'm trying that on (probably plain old) steel. Should I be using any kind of lube/cutting oil on the lathe bit ? I successfully turned a...

    Using lube on bandsaw ?

I've got a Proxxon micro bandsaw that works pretty well. I've cut 3/4" steel bar with it (slowly), but am finding that it dulls the blade rather quickly. I was trying to cut another hunk off the steel bar last nite and it was taking forever. I gave up, then tried it on brass and aluminum and...

Pleasant surprise from Enco on Chinese reamer set

I just got a Chinese reamer set from Enco and was pleasantly surprised at the nice aluminum brief-case that came with it. The reamers have their own labeled foam cutouts. See attached pix below. Downside is that box takes up waaaaaaay too much room (yeah, I know, can never be satisfied :big:)...

Mounting parts using superglue and releasing them ...

I finally got around to trying out using superglue to hold a part so I could machine it in my mill (Sherline). I'm experimenting with a small (3/4" & 1/2" o.d.) brass and steel flywheels (I'm building the "Millie" steam engine from the Sherline book, yes will post a build thread ! :) ) I turn...

    Killer sunset in Los Angeles

There was a wonderful, actually, pretty darn awesome sunset last night here in Southern California. Video editor suggestions

I'm looking for a decent program for editing video. I'm getting tired of showing my crappy videos straight out of my little point 'n shoot and want to clean them up a bit before posting them. Small model boiler explosion video

Dunno if this has been posted here before, but warrants viewing. Couple of folks heating a small model boiler (soft-soldered ??) with a blowtorch (th_wtf1 WTF were they thinking ??) , messing with the safety valve (or lack thereof) and disastrous results. Don't think anybody was hurt, but it's a...
