    3D printer stepper driver selection

Which printer are you using? What is the current driver setup? Most 3d printers out there use monolithic driver/amplifier boards. There are several options to get "quieter" operation that usually involve replacing the driver board with something that has better microstepping and faster cpu...

    LIve Steam back issue

Hi All, Came across a set of plans on Jon-Tom for another low temp stirling that came out of the July/Aug 1999 issue of Live Steam. Upon a closer look it only has the even pages. And, of course, that is the one particular issue I don't have from that year. Would anyone have a copy they would be...

upstate New York steam fest - Pageant of Steam

Made it yesterday for a few hours. Well worth the 6 bucks. Not a lot of steam, but they did have 2 big corliss engines running and a good selection of steam tractors, lots of hitnmiss engines and, for this year, a nice working display of antique construction equipment with a big dirt play area...

    HLV half-nut

Hi, I'm working with a bunch of high school students on a robotics project. We had and HLV-H toolrom lathe donated and have it up and running. Great stuff!! Lately, threading is an issue though. No matter what we try we cant get the half nut to engage. It feels like there's some thing...

    Lathe took a swan dive

We use those motors for robots for our FIRST (www.usfirst.org) robotics team at the local high school. They have an amazing amount of torque. Geared down we've used them to have a 120 Lb. robot lift itself at the end of an 18 inch arm.

    Delta drill press refurb

Decided to bite the bullet and refurb my old Delta/Milwaukee DP220 drill press. I had picked this up for $20 at a yard sale years ago and just lived with the rattles and shaking when I used it. Found some bearings that fit the bores on the spindle sleeve and made inserts to mimic the old...

    My tool gloat

Son walked in the door the other day and handed me this. Found it while cleaning out the shop he works in. These all appear to be freshly sharpened HSS mills from 1/8 to 1". Couple of carbides. Mostly English manufacture. Looks like I'm set on milling tooling for a bit.

    Greeetings from western NY state

Alright, I'm almost open for business. Here's a couple of shots of the shop with everything in place. Now I just have to get everything leveled. The Southbend is going to need some work (half nut, cross slide play, etc.), but will do the job in the meantime as the spindle appears fine.

    workshop design Visio

Hi, I'm a huge fan of Visio, been using it for space layouts for as long as I can remember. I don't think there's any shop specific templates that are free. The pro version that I use has a bunch of manufacturing layout templates that can usually be persuaded into being what you want. I also...

    Greeetings from western NY state

Hey RL, I'm actually up close to SeaBreeze in Irondequoit. Once I get my shop organized maybe we can do a "garden tour" and visit each other. Anyone else in the Rochester/ western NY area? Maybe make a whole Saturday out of this and meet a few people some time and see what everyone is up to.
