Where do you store your small offcuts?

Hi All, I have a large heap of small bits of steel etc. that are under 6in long that are currently in a pile. It's a really bad storage system as you can only really get the bits on the top and sides. Has anybody made/found an elegant system for storing small scrap metal bits? I'm thinking...

    Lathe Identification

Hi All, I just picked up one of these lathes today: It's labelled as a Shanghai Ning Jiang HG 28 but it would seem that there are only about 3 people in the whole google-able world that have one. So I'm guessing it must be an unbadged something else. Does anybody here have one or have seen...

    Power Feed for Mill

Here's a couple of pictures of my half done power feed for my mill. I hope to finish it tomorrow. Any suggestions/criticisms? Please don't hesitate to do so. It uses a windscreen wiper motor and drive gear from a photocopier. I have made the adapters and all I need is a frame now.

My CNC questions thread - keep an eye on this one...

I am trying to build a CNC dividing head, but I have absolutely no knowledge of the electronics side of things that doing this will require. So I have decided to start a thread just for asking various questions regarding CNC basics rather than cluttering up the Q & A forum. So here's my...

Where to scrounge strong stepper motors from?

Hi all, I am getting components together to build a CNC dividing head and I am now looking for a stepper motor. It has been mentioned that the can be scrounged off printers, etc., but I am not sure about the specs of these. So there are really two questions. First, what torque level am I...

Hi All, Where is the cheapest place to buy CNC timing gears and belts? Is eBay as cheap as any? I can get a 40T gear for about $30 posted.

    CNC Dividing Head

Hi All, I am considering cutting some gears and therefore I need a rotary table or dividing head. I am considering building a CNC dividing head. The basic idea is to build a dividing head like Harold Hall's basic one and then power it with a stepper motor to get the divisions. So here are...

    Second hand air compressor safety

Hi all, I just bought a used 3 phase air compressor, the guy reckons it puts out about 30 cfm. My question is this: I have heard that old air compressors occasionally blow up if the tank hasn't been drained after use everytime (the water rusts the bottom out). Is this true? Many thanks.

    Carolina Bandsaw Restoration

Here is my latest addition to the machine shop. I was picking up some wood from a guy's place who was cleaning up and this little beauty was sitting sadly next to his shed. When I asked him if he was getting rid of it he told me I could have it. I have decided to restore it. I want to paint it...

    Gearcutting

Hi all, Would anyone know whether this rotary table would be ok (rigid enough, etc.) for cutting gears (up to about 6in) ? : http://www.machineryhouse.com.au/R001 Also, is the degree of turns (IYSWIM - 10 minutes in this case) small enough for most teeth numbers? (i.e. 52 teeth) Thanks from a...

    Kiln for casting?

Hi All, I was just wondering if one could melt metal in a pottery kiln? Thanks in anticipation.

Here we go - another EZ engine

Hi, This is my first post but I have been lurking around for about a month now. I found this site whilst doing a search for info about flamelickers - I found the thread about that excellent poppin' build by NickG. I am really really new at machining :-[ , and I have a 1976 tawainese lathe and...
