    ruined a mill spindle (maybe)

Update: I spun the collet MT2 in the lathe while holding sandpaper on it which effectively removed the galling. Ordered the MT2 finishing taper which should arrive before Feb. 7, as I used low-cost shipping

    ruined a mill spindle (maybe)

thanks again, all! AoneMarine, I'll try your method first with a finishing reamer. I'll turn it by hand. As for the collett that spun, it shows signs of distress (circular lines). So perhaps put it in lathe chuck and using compound at angle use a finishing bit to lightly clean it up? (semper...

    ruined a mill spindle (maybe)

thanks; the blueing test was done and doesn't look bad; just the tip part inside the spindle so I'll just continue using it for my occasional hobby work

    newbee question

In 3 years moving to the country and building a 15" estate railway. It will not be a miniature railway; rather, the design will be similar to what mines use. Rather than wait, I'd like to start building things I need now, starting with curly spoked and other types of wheels. Not alum, but...

    foundry/casting

I want to build an outdoor foundry and have been looking stuff up on the internet regarding how to do it and had some questions. I do plan to use propane as fuel. 1. I was gonna use firebrick but the wool stuff is supposed to heat up quicker and thus save fuel. But wouldn't moisture get into...
