I agree, a wood cutting bandsaw blade with less teeth on it would be a bit more aggressive and cut more freely.

That reminds me of my first job. The company next to us had a lot of big machines. On their big lathes they made big rollers for a paper mill. Some of the metal chips that came off that machine had to be cut with a large bolt cutter to keep them from winding their way across the shop floor.

I used to have one of these lathes. Sometimes when I would turn off the spindle using the speed control switch it would run a little after the switch was off. I opened up the speed controler and made some adjustments to some of the pots inside and never had that problem again. I couldn't tell...

Are you setting the blade at an angle so it pulls back from the cut on the up stroke or is it just strait up and down? It is so cool to see this project come to life. This is something that will be fun to demonstrate for family and friends. I'd like to run one of these on a steam engine...

That still sounds like the lathe bed is twisted a little because the machine isn't level. If you do not have access to a precision level I would try adjusting one of the leveling feet until you see the rocking of the saddle stops. Not the best way to do it but it should show if level is the...

Are you sure it's not just a gib adjustment on the cross slide like I mentioned? Make it tighter and do a test cut.

The air spindle is a great way to grind end mills. Many years ago I used to grind end mills on a air spindle unit mounting on a surface grinder. The shop I worked at bought it some place. That thing was smooth as can be. Building one using a large ER collet extension like an ER20 is a great idea.

I remember having a problem something like this on a Bridgeport EZ-path lathe when facing. We would get a pattern across the face when facing. We adjusted the gibs and the problem went away. Haven't had it come back in over 12 years now.

That second water wheel for reverse is a great idea. Someone put a lot of thought into getting the most out of water power on that one.

I may be wrong, but in the videos I posted it looks like it is advancing as the blade on the up stroke. On an old machine made of wood there may be enough give in all the moving parts that this would work fine. Then I have to wonder if the aggressive blade they are using tends to pull itself...
