Hi

I`m looking for some info on building a oscillating engine based on these
plans:
http://npmccabe.tripod.com/45engine.htm

Most of it seems OK but I can`t understand the inlet and exhaust
arrangement. There is a detail box B which shows the exhaust as
straight but the inlet is a L shape. This is my second build ( first
McCabe Runner successful) I might be missing something really simple
but if anyone has built a engine of this type and can explain the
valve arrangement I would be most grateful.
The pictures and the view http://npmccabe.tripod.com/Steam_45.gif seem to indicate the inlet ( and exhaust?) going through the frame.
Other tips also welcome.

Thanks

Paul

Forgot to add that there are plenty of plans on the site for other types of engines etc. Well worth a look.

Hi Paul,

The designer had to do it that way.

Because the exhaust goes straight to atmosphere, it just has a hole drilled straight thru. If you were to drill straight thru for the inlet, then open up the hole to take the inlet pipe, you would most probably be hitting the exhaust hole with the drill. So what has been done is move the inlet hole to the side face to keep the two separate.

I hope that has explained it OK. It is a normally excepted practice on engines of this type, especially if made in a smaller size.

Hi John

Thanks for the reply.

It confused me because the inlet is shown on the opposite face to the cylinder ( same as exhaust) in the photos and the 3D image but I now understand the reason behind the inlet being shown on detail as L shaped. I shall have to check for clearance as I go.

Cheers

Paul
