    Selection of Steel to use

Midwest metals for pricing- and often range. - my favourite personal choice. Online Metals, for fast shipping- use them for my professional R+D shop. Expensive though.

    Hello from Lancashire, England

As a graduate engineer of Leeds Uni (Yorkshire), I was delighted by the reaction to my toast to the Duke of Lancaster at the 100th anniversary of my department

Getting in Trouble for Metal Chips in the House

I still remember, 24 years later, being bollocked by my wife for the crying baby....with chips in the back of his diaper.

    Advise on Myford leadscrew

We never had problem with our leadscrews on our production used Myfords- but we would replace the halfnuts every couple of years. Its a long time since I used a Myford, how expensive are the nuts these days ?

    Can this be repaired?

Yes ,but I believe its possible to actually ship stuff across the Atlantic these days.

    Can this be repaired?

I don't think I've seen these guys mentioned, but their prices for gears are unbeatable, and though I am now US based after moving from the UK to head the R+D department for a company here, we buy gears from the UK and ship Here's, specifically, their helical gear PDF...

    3D Printed Patterns

You could also try Dichloromethane - paint stripper - but absolutely you must use appropriate PPE.

    3D Printed Patterns

In the back yard, some way from anything inflammable, put a glass tank on a hot(warm) plate, and pour 1/4" of acetone in. Heat VERY gently for a couple of minutes. The acetone vapour will displace the air, and you will have a saturated solvent vapour in the tank. Lower your part into the warm...

    Centring in a 4-Jaw Chuck

I'm surprised (or I missed it) no-one has mentioned the adjustable three jaw. I have one on a Myford, and very nice one on my big SouthWestern. Right now my big one typically holds anything from 1/4 to 6" or so within about 3 tenths of a thou. The four jaw takes a small crane to lift on...

    Great coolant except its toxic

I'm senior research engineer for our company R+D operation, and the boss bought me a machine shop as a joining gift :-) We push a LOT of work through my shop, not as much as a production shop, probably about as much as a model eng. shop who is getting a lot of hassle from their other half to get...

    Great coolant except its toxic

We've been using soluble oils for a hundred years by now. I don't think they are really recognised as deadly chemicals, since they are pretty bio-compatible to begin with. Professionally I am using a soy bean oil based lube. One thing amateurs tend to do is run cutting fluids too thick - 20..30...

    Soft copper tubing?

Another vote for the fine salt as a bending aid. I've had to make dozens of fine, tight precision pancake coils in copper and stainless for professional works with it. Filling with Woods metal is also good, but harder to remove

? On Bronze bearing Id and od fitment

Lapping soft metals needs special non-embedding compounds, my favourite is called "Timesaver", you can buy it in big tins, but there is a nice sampler set of their hard and soft compounds available for $40 IIRC.

Any ideas what this is off, and is it worth anything

Yes. Sad isn't it ? Anyway, she's acquired a bunch of stuff like that she hasn't a clue about. When I find out where she's selling it on, I'll let you all know. It might be a relative, because she says she wants to honour the care and attention all the tools have received by making sure they go...

Any ideas what this is off, and is it worth anything

I don't recognise what machine this changewheel set is off. A friend of mine acquired it from a yard sale in CA, and wants to know if its worth anything ? Any ideas folks ?

    What's your latest project?

LONG time lurker, delurking. I've fnally started a garden railroad engine, running with live steam on a radio control system. The engine is derived from one called the "Dacre", modified with Walschaerts valve gear (the original had no reverse). Might write a blog with the build in it.
