    Linux "Q4OS"

To open a terminal, do ctrl-alt-T, That gives you a screen where you can type the commands which someone has suggested. It's better to copy and paste commands, that way you don't get typos. To copy a command, highlight it and do ctrl C. to paste it into the terminal you have to do ctrl-shift-V...

    Walschaerts Mechanism

The return crank affixed to the crankpin gives the same motion an eccentric would. The curved link, called an expansion link I think, should be pivoted in it's center, not at the end if it is going to allow reversing the engine.

    Mill Engine Question

This cut shows that the steam enters the middle of the cylinder and exhausts at the ends. http://vintagemachinery.org/MfgIndex/Images/2790-B.jpg The picture in the OP shows the vertical pipe connecting to a much smaller pipe with a stop valve in it, that wouldn't work very well for an...

    Select 816 B Lathe Acquired

I think that milling attachment is an Atlas product. It might need to be modified to fit your lathe.

    Steamengine with Hackworth valve gear

Case traction engines use something very similar.

A speedy recovery to you John. I have very much enjoyed your posts and descriptions and photos of how you make and modify things. Jim

What kind if splined shaft is this ?

Looking closely at the splined shaft it appears the spline was first cut to depth with an end mill, then a wheel type cutter was run down the slots to form the profile. I'm wondering why you would put set screws on a splined coupling? Seems to me that would defeat the purpose of the splines. I'm...

    What I do.

Dredging up an old thread, I promised to post the result here, about forgot. The project I posted about back in the spring worked. The second (Got a tapered bore in the first) bronze guide I made cut the smoking by about half, a new set of rings took care of the rest. The first job was to...

    What I do.

Still working on it slowly, lots of things get in the way. Perhaps I should more fully answer your first posts. Wizard69, I have been accumulating tools for 50+ years, have a few pieces I've had since the mid 50's. Some bought new, but most got at flea markets and yard sales, quite a few I have...

    What I do.

Thanks Fellows. I must modify the statement, "making or modifying all tooling", I ordered an adjustable reamer for sizing the guide. I found that the 5/16 reamer I have wasn't going to work. The valve stem is .3095, if I used the .3125 reamer the guide would be just .0005 shy of the wear the...

    What I do.

Hi, I just got a reminder to participate message. I suppose this would be the best place for me to respond. I have never built an engine, I would like to, I have a nice steamer in mind but I don't believe I have sufficient skill or equipment to do the job in a creditable manner. What I...

    Checking in, Question, Tip, Link

Thanks Hopper and starbolin; I started on some filing today, but had too much to remove and found that an angle grinder and belt sander got rid of it a lot faster. I'll try to finish it by filing just to see if I can get it anywhere close. Got top find my granddaughter's sidewalk chalk. It's...

    Checking in, Question, Tip, Link

Thanks for the replies. dclark; No I don't have a filing rest, but it's on my to-do list. Thank you for the link, I have it bookmarked. I never imagined there were so many attachments for the Cowells lathe. ShopShoe; I do try to practice most of the things you listed. I'll print this page...

    Checking in, Question, Tip, Link

Hi All I haven't been making much except mistakes lately. Made some parts for my mower last fall, then was out of the shop because of my wife's surgery. There is a Gremlin in my basement who likes to carry off and hide my tools. In late 2011 I got an HF carbide grinder. I worked it over and...

    First post and question.

Sorry, I must have been looking at it crosseyed, read it as 5/8 yesterday, but it sure looks like 3/8 now. I am overdue for new glasses. Jim

    First post and question.

Thanks Tin Falcon I'll check the Irwin/Hanson adapters. My biggest drill chuck is 5/8, but I could probably make an adapter for the adapter. There is no reason for me to power tap, don't tap that many holes. Hand taps I avoid whenever possible, I buy spiral point taps at flea markets and such...

    First post and question.

Thanks for the welcome. I forgot to say earlier that I am aware of the Rubberflex chucks, but I think they are beyond my means. Yes I use the keyed 5/8" chuck on my larger drill press for tapping. It does fine with smaller taps, but I'm not comfortable using it on anything above 3/8-16. For the...

    First post and question.

Hi all; I have been registered and reading for some time, so figured it is time to say hello. I've been a lifelong tinkerer, but have never built an engine, although there are a few I would like to try, but would like to get a mill first and have not found one that I like and can afford...
