    A small start....

Gerald, thank you! On the Midwest a standard mamod SV does the trick as well. Tin, thank you! Stan Bray's books are easily available here, in fact I have his "Model Marine Steam" book. "Simple Model Steam Engines" is on my Christmas list :)

    A small start....

Thanks for all those kind words gents! Like I said, if it weren't for this forum I'd never plucked up the courage to start in the first place. Bentprop, the loco's overscale 0 gauge...kind of a gauge 1 frame on an 0 gauge chassis. Bowman made 4 locos and a range of simple stationary engines...

    A small start....

Hi gents, Been a while since I've posted here, but I've been a frequent lurker....I've been familiarising myself with basic operations in my little modified unimat 4, so I'm at least au fait with facing, turning, parting off etc..... My first opportunity arose when I picked up this little...

Newbie question - cutting bar stock

Yes please Rich, I'd love to see those plans!

    Pressure testing

As far as I'm aware we test with water because it does not compress (much) and therefore doesn't expand in case of a sudden drop in pressure. If your boiler fails at 100psi of water pressure you'll get a jet of water - if it fails at 100psi of air you get a big bang and a lot of flying shrapnel.

    Turning very small diameter bar

Al, thanks very much - that is indeed what I did. I do have both live and dead centres, but I did not have a centre drill bit small enough to put a hole in a 1/8" bit of brass. I've just received my order from Chronos though, so as of now I do! ;-)

    Turning very small diameter bar

Well, I've managed to do some work! I'm currently working on a boat powered by a tiny Philcraft steam engine....for this I wanted to make a very light prop shaft....I've used 1/8" brass round running in a copper tube. To minimise friction, I've skimmed off a couple of .01" of the portion that...

Newbie question - cutting bar stock

Thanks all, Stan, I have a modified Unimat 4, but I've only had it for a few days.As I am totally new to all this, all I've done so far is familiarising myself with all the components and with basic methodology - not done any actual cutting yet! Other tools in my small arsenal include a power...

Newbie question - cutting bar stock

Thanks for all the good advice gents! BTW, I made a silly mistake in my post - where I wrote 2" diameter I meant 20mm diameter. Looks like I might save up for a bandsaw then, but in the meantime I'll stick with my trusty hacksaw, and I'll see what can be done with my jigsaw as well.

Newbie question - cutting bar stock

Apologies if this is mentioned elsewhere on the forum, and I really hope this isn't too basic, but..... What would be the most effective way to cut bar stock to size.....I'm kind of suspecting the answer will be "a hacksaw and liberal elbow grease", but is there a more effective way? What I...

    Newbie from Cardiff, South Wales

Kind words all around - I've got a feeling I'm going to like it here! :) I have to be honest straight away and say that I bought the boat in 90% finished condition, and the engine 100% finished. All I've done so far is make her "seaworthy", done the inside cladding, fitted the RC and a variety...

Thank you Marv! I think boats of this scale will all be RC....I'm certainly glad mine is, it moves a lot faster than I can swim! ;) Mine is currently set up with 3 channels: rudder, throttle and whistle. Experience has taught me that, depending on how hard I drive the engine, I can get...

    Newbie from Cardiff, South Wales

Thank you for the warm welcome gents! Here's a picture of my engine as requested.....it is, of course, a Bogstandard twin double acting oscillating engine coupled to a 3.5" Maccsteam boiler.....it drives my Krick Victoria based launch with power to spare. I'm not trying to butter John up, but...

    Newbie from Cardiff, South Wales

Hi all, My name is Odilon - I'm based in Cardiff, UK. I came to this board via a mention on another forum, frequented by other members of this board. My main interest has been toy steam engines, but earlier this year I bought a large model steam boat, with an engine built by a senior member of...
