How can I hold a spinner so that it can be machined inside?

Hey guys, I have this spinner hub, that is drilled and tapped already for a 1/4-28 crank. I would like to machine away about a 1/2" of the material on the inside, so that I can thread it onto the crankshaft and sit down flush against the propeller, and hiding the prop locknuts inside. I cannot...

Not an engine casting but.... PMR boiler feed pump casting kit?

Didn't know where else to put this question... Has anyone made this pump from the casting kit? Not the pre-machined parts kit, but the raw materials kit? As I have not yet made anything from a casting, I was wondering if there are any precautions I should know about when working with the cast...

Any hobby machinist clubs/classes in the San Fernando Valley?

I live in the San Fernando Valley. I would love to attend a hobby machinist class or join a club so that I could learn "hands on" from others. I am aware of SCHISM , but for various reasons (driving distance and my walking disabilty) it is not a convenient option for me. So, does anyone know if...

Using the Sieg mini mill to run a tap into steel?

I was wondering if it would be possible to let the mini mill do the work of running a 14mm tap into a piece of steel. I want to tap a .500" hole so that I can mount a QCTP stud into the steel. Has anyone been doing this? I figured maybe by getting it to turn really really slow it might work...

How much cutting oil do I really need?

Hi guys, I was cutting some steel for the first time on my mini mill. Oh, I have trimmed some t-nuts before, but other than that I have only milled aluminum. So anyway, I was cutting cold roll steel, 5/8" thick and I needed to mill down 1/4" of it for 6" long by 1.25" wide. I initially used a...

A cool "Gizmo" I just got

:) Harbor Freight had a 25% off coupon for today, New Years, only. I went there and found what I think will be a very useful gizmo to have for my lathe. It is a contact tachometer. Nothing new in that. But, this one also has a switch to select "Surface Feet Per Minute". I used it already to...

    What did I do wrong?

I used two new procedures for the first time today on my lathe. Taper turning, and boring. My goal was to make a funnel for a smokestack. All went really well, for awhile. I was feeling pretty good about it all. Then all heck broke loose. While trying to do a taper turn on the inside of the...

    Gates V-belt for 9x20 lathe

I have one new M5 x 710 v-belt for the HF 9x20 lathe. Supposed to fit the other brands as well, Grizzly, etc. My HF 9x20 lathe came with a defective belt and it broke shortly after getting the lathe. The info I got was that it took a 5x710 belt so I ordered two. Well the 710 belt would barely...

    Braze on top of braze?

Quick question needing an answer: I want to go around once more on an item I brazed, so that I can make a more aesthetically pleasing fillet. Do I: 1) Brush on flux first, then heat and apply braze rod 2) Just heat and apply brazing rod on top of the old braze Thanks!

Aligning the tailstock on a 9x20 lathe.

Of the few long'ish pieces I have tried to machine on my lathe, they have always had some taper to them. I have set the tick marks on my tailstock to "zero" but that has not removed it. I have never been able to get rid of the taper in my 9x20 lathe. I certainly don't know how it is supposed...

    Baby Steps

I have a HF 9x20 lathe and a HF Mini Mill. I always wanted these machines so that I could repair my r/c models parts and make modifications, etc. I also had a dream that someday I could actually make parts from a set of plans. I do not read blueprint type drawings very well. I could use a...

    Hello to all! :)

I am a hobbyist and I build radio controlled model aircraft and boats. I am slowly learning to machine small bits and hope to build an engine from plans one day. In the meantime I love to look at and read about the builds that others have done or are working on. Cheers! -Tom Keliher...
