Questions regarding drilling small holes, and runout.

Probably a final update to this post. I am now successfully drilling down to 0.3mm. The smallest I have tried so far. No issues, perfect hole size. I broached slightly from the bottom to remove burr / material that was deformed, but I attribute that probably to the fact I didn't drill the piece...

Questions regarding drilling small holes, and runout.

Neat! Thanks for sharing. Mine is a Cameron 164 I got used from ebay for what I would say it a pretty good deal. There were some others on there, but their condition was... sketchy looking on surface level. While I have you here, there is one question I have. Has your motor ever given off a...

Questions regarding drilling small holes, and runout.

This ended up being 100% the issue of my runout. However, it is not something I can fix with the tools I have. There were some work arounds but in the end my holes were still not concentric and were oversized by 0.05mm. Unacceptable when the material I have to play with tapping is only 0.1mm. In...

Questions regarding drilling small holes, and runout.

Well the taper on the spindle is at 0.01 runout. I took off the chuck and cleaned everything well with acetone and TIR appears to now be at 0.03mm. (previously .04) So either cleaning helped, or maybe the way I fit it counteracted the taper runout? Or heck, could be that I just rotated the...

Questions regarding drilling small holes, and runout.

I've put a ER11 collet chuck on it now and my static TIR with a cheap collet (around $15) seems to be 0.04mm now. Down from 0.1mm. Not too bad. Guess I'll try my operation again now and see how it goes. Edit: Techniks 04211-1/8. Not sure how other brands compare.

Questions regarding drilling small holes, and runout.

Thank you all for the help. Also, I do think I found a major source of the vibration and runout from when the machine is running. If you look at the schematics in the manual here , it seems to be that there is a lot of play between the column and the bar that is driven by the handle / ratchet...

Questions regarding drilling small holes, and runout.

I'm not trying to seem sarcastic, but if that's not how you do it, then what is the purpose of the spot drill that exist at that size? I see spot drills from 0.1mm to 1mm. etc. Or do you just mean it's usually not necessary? It is a jumper (a spring, of sorts) for a wristwatch. And the main...

Questions regarding drilling small holes, and runout.

interesting. I think I will pick up a 0.4mm carbide drill from mcmaster. Still 3mm shank, but the cutting length is a bit shorter at 4.8mm. I see what you mean about the center punch. How can I accurately center my workpiece to drill on the intersecting scribe in the drill? I do have one of...

Questions regarding drilling small holes, and runout.

I'm sorry I don't quite understand. I just assume collets would be better, I suppose. As I do also see them on premium sensotive drill presses such as here and here. I almost won a Levin, but I was outbid by $50. Anyways I digress. If I want to drill a locationally accurate hole, but I have...

Questions regarding drilling small holes, and runout.

Hello! I have a Hamilton sensitive drill press (model A-M) that uses a JT1 tapered (<-- I think) jacobs chuck, and maxes out around 7k rpm. The runout from the shank of a 3mm bit is 0.08 - 0.1mm. The runout of the spindle just above the chuck is 0.01mm. As I said before, I'm not positive of the...
