'Vickie' Stirling Engine - Jerry Howell Design

Took a bit of fiddling to get her running smoothly, but here are a couple of videos of the finished product! A very satisfying build!

'Vickie' Stirling Engine - Jerry Howell Design

I slightly modified the design of the spirit burner to include a few more bolts for good measure, and then turned up a miniature oiler. Now working on getting the model running smoothly and will post a finished video soon!

Thanks, but I think the down lights in our kitchen are quite flattering!

Here are the finished fluted columns and cross slides, all of the parts prior to assembly, and the displacer cylinder sub-assembly.

Here is the small 'cooling fan' assembly, together with the flywheels and frame pieces all painted up. The close up of the fan brings out all the finish imperfections, but it actually looks pretty ok to the naked eye. I found that part quite tricky to make.

'Vickie' Stirling Engine - Jerry Howell Design

Here are the main displacer cylinder and power cylinder components. The displacer is made from aluminium bar bored out to be very thin walled and light. Quite a lot of work in the fluted cross slide guides! All made from bar stock.

'Vickie' Stirling Engine - Jerry Howell Design

I've been working on the Jerry Howell designed 'Vickie' Stirling engine for the last few months, and am now approaching completion of the project. So this won't be a detailed step-by-step build thread, but I thought I would post some photos as I finish up the parts and get to put the working...

    Stirling engine efficiency.

That seems like an awful lot of heat energy to produce quite limited mechanical output. I recently finished a Jerry Howell design stirling fan and it will run quite vigorously on a 1 cm spirit burner flame. The key for me was to eliminate any source of friction and to ensure that the engine...

Jerry Howell - Super Stirling Fan

Agree with this. When the engine is cold (or strictly speaking when the 'hot end' is at the same temperature as the 'cold end' there is no change in the volume of the air as the displacer goes up and down and moves the air about inside the engine If you then turn the engine in this state...

Jerry Howell - Super Stirling Fan

Hi Looking at the design, if it is going to run at all, it should do if you disconnect the drive to the rotor and tail propellor - the horizontal flywheel should be more than adequate to keep the engine turning over if it is ready to run. Doing that will eliminate quite a lot of points of...
