    Cutting gaskets with K40-style laser?

Copper is rarely laser cut as it can damage the source, especially CO2 lasers but a fiber source can also be ruined. Damage occurs during the pierce as the molten copper is highly reflective. Copper is best punched, milled or cut with an abrasive water jet. I have both CO2 (150W) and fiber...

Colin Binnie's 'La Belles' for home construction.

Tony, was this ever completed? If so, I'd love to see a picture of it.

    Laser cut, CNC machined engine

Part of the idea of using laser cutting is to give a different look and keep cost down. It's vastly cheaper to laser cut parts compared to machining them. Some people might be on a tight budget.

    Laser cut, CNC machined engine

Hi All I'm really just thinking out loud here but it would be nice to get some feedback :) I run a laser cutting business and can cut up to 10mm mild steel. I have also recently bought a Mazak QT6 CNC lathe and a Syil X7-20 VMC has been ordered and should arrive in a few months time. I have...

    Home Machinist Gear Cutting

I use Gearotic Motion to generate the CAD files and then cut the gears on my laser. Finish and precision is OK for low load applications. There are several online gear generators available.

    Designing steam engines

I made a parametric drawing in Freecad of an oscillating steam engine. If I change a dimension, all the others follow suit accordingly.

    Gerry's Beam again.

Very nice. I always have a lot of waste from the laser, especially 2mm and 4mm mild steel and 2mm stainless steel. Many of the parts for this engine could be laser cut so I ought to give it a go.

    Laser cut gaskets

I run a small laser cutting business and have been full time self-employed since November 2019. I have a 100W CO2 laser cutter/engraver for wood and plastics and a 1kW fiber laser cutter for steel and metals. I also have a 50W fiber laser engraver for metal and ceramics. My customers are a mixed...

    Tormach 1100MX opinion

Depends a bit on config but standard with 12-tool ATC, Siemens 808D control and 3.7kW spindle it's $18000 FOB Shanghai. Upgrade to 5.5kW spindle is $290.

    Tormach 1100MX opinion

The Skyfire is very much hobby grade and from what I gather not good value for money. I very quickly passed on that as an option. Most second hand imports are people buying directly from abroad. It's an option but I've not come across anything that suits budget and size. There are a few Mini...

    Tormach 1100MX opinion

Could you qualify that? Was were the issues with it? Most feedback I see on Chinese machines is anecdotal - very rare to get a first hand opinion. There is a big difference in quality from mfg. to mfg. Some people seem to just pick the cheapest they can find off Alibaba without doing any...

    Laser cut gaskets

Some info: https://www.ulsinc.com/resources/advanced-materials-processing-center/teflon#:~:text=Laser%20Cutting,-Laser%20cutting%20is&text=Due%20to%20its%20high%20melt,sometimes%20associated%20with%20thermal%20processes. I have very high volume extraction on my laser so no issues with laser...

A drawing is all that is needed. I'd be happy to do it for you, but I'm probably in the wrong part of the World in relation to you.

    Laser cut gears

I wasn't sure if edge quality and precision would be good enough but after a bit of fiddling with the parameters I'm able to cut useable gears on the laser down to MOD 0.7 in 3mm stainless steel. For MOD 0.5 I have to go thinner on the material. For low load/speed applications they work OK. The...

    Tormach 1100MX opinion

I can't afford Haas or Tormach so I'm considering importing a VMC from China. Both my CO2 and fiber laser cutters are from China and I've never had any problems with them. $15000 will buy me a machine with ATC and a Siemens control.

    Hello from Denmark

Affordable, DIY10kW CO2 lasers 40 years ago? I doubt it. GIven that a CO2 laser is about 10% efficient it would have required 100kW worth of cooling to keep it running. A 10kW CO2 laser would be a very serious piece of kit and very, very expensive back then. I think you may be confusing mW with...

    Hello from Denmark

There is a huge difference between a low power CO2 laser and a fiber laser for metal cutting. My 100W CO2 laser was around the USD3500 mark. Smaller CO2 lasers like the K40 can be had for a few hundred dollars. Of course they won't cut metal....

    Hello from Denmark

A 1kW fiber laser will only cut steel and metals. It can cut up to 10mm mild steel with O2 assist gas and up to 4mm stainless steel. 1.5mm brass is also possible. I paid USD34000 18 months ago but prices have dropped below USD30K now. This is direct import from manufacturer in China. The...
