    New headstock on old lathe

Looks like a good lathe and a possible candidate for an electronic lead screw :http://www.autoartisans.com/ELS/ Although , if you want to stick with change gears Myford gears (and copys of) are cheap and plentiful. You'll need a 127T plus a few others to do metric threading But. Before you...

Combined ball turner and rounding table

There's quite a few good ball turning ideas on this French forum: http://www.usinages.com/accessoires-outils-coupe-pour-tournage-f109/outil-tourner-les-spheres-t31118.html Google translate works fairly well if, like me, your French is not all that good.

How NOT to break small milling cutters.

Nice one John :) I'm sure you also know of tipping the head at an angle to lift the slow cutting centre 'point' away from the work. Bill

    2 cylinder inside-out steam engine

Chuck, Have you considered closing off the exhaust hole inside the cylinder (i.e. moving the exhaust hole further away from the piston so it's partially covered by the cylinder gland) to provide an air cushion instead_of/as_well_as the o-ring? Bill

FS: Coaxial Indicator (all profits to Royal British Legion)

If you mean the cost then it's not too bad: Royal mail air (small packet) is ~£6 (but insurance is only upto £46 ) usually quite reliable Royal Mail Airsure (small packet) online tracking, £500 compensation for £15.97 so, it should not put you off :) Bill

    "Updating" my Pedersen mill

I was suggesting a possible cause of it, yes. ;) Given your description, noise while moving towards the column rather than moving away, I would still check the gib. It could be jamming - Perhaps the cause of the lost teeth?

    "Updating" my Pedersen mill

Might be the gib sticking. The tapered gib should be locked between two adjusters to prevent it jamming when moved. This is the table gib on my Haighton (the saddle is pretty much the same) : the heads of the adjuster screws fit into the recesses on the tapered gib This is the underside of...

    reverse tumbler gears for G0602

The Hardinge gear train above looks complicated but is essentially very simple: The spindle drives two gears at a 1:1 ratio one drives a dog-gear forwards, the other drives a shaft to a reversing pair to drive a dog-gear backwards. Between the two dog-gears is a sliding dog-clutch which drives...

    reverse tumbler gears for G0602

Excellent work :) Have you considered fitting it with a Hardinge style dog-clutch for threading?

    Optical or Magnetic

Well, I can say the Sony Magnescales on my HLV-H when I got it were absolutely chock-o-block with congealed coolant to the point where one would only move 2" - I flushed them out with jizer and WD40 re-oiled the ball races on the pick-up head (these things are beautifully made) and they are now...

Sharing a VFD and DRO Read out between Mill and Lathe

First thing to remember is that VFDs are not three phase generators, they are motor drivers and should only be used to drive the motor. Ideally they should be set up to drive a particular motor. Secondly, VFDs do not take kindly to being connected or disconnected while on load. That said, it...
