    Tether Cars

Stupid question: Has anyone here made a tether car?

    End Mills?

Thanks for the input everyone- I was considering using the TTS system for end mill holders and collet chucks. As far as the end mills were concerned, I think that I will go with HSS and Carbide. It seems that those two work well together for me most of the time.

    End Mills?

Hello folks, For model engineering work, what do you prefer, HSS or Carbide end mills? Collets or end mill holders or both? Thanks!

Tips on selecting a lathe -will it thread

John, Curiously enough the largest I have seen the wheels is around 5 inches. I was mostly worried about these machines being rigid enough for that kind of work. I had planned on having my mentor help me with any set up and what not- making sure everything is aligned and the like. The dealer...

Tips on selecting a lathe -will it thread

Would the LMS 7x16 lathe work for 3/4" scale live steam engines? I realize some wheels might need a larger lathe. Also the X2 mill that they sell- for other parts.

Bazmaks version of Niels diamond tool holder

Niels, pardon the stupidity in this question- but are the bits being fed into a round hole on the tool holder? What keeps them in the right direction- just the tension from the screw alone?

    Lathe Tooling

Gents, I have had good luck on my Delta lathe with CCMT and TCMT bits. The vendor (Little Machine Shop) has told me with the brushless motor lathe that they sell it would do just fine with indexable bits. Just in case and to give it the due diligence that is needed, does anyone have any plans...

    Lathe Tooling

Alright, so this is going to sound strange but here it goes- Normally with QCTPs, the tool gets mounted where the tool is coming out of the right, so that it would go on the left when profiling is being done, boring bars to the left so that it would go horizontal for boring obviously. If I was...

    Tool Holder Question

Crap well that just ruined my joy. The Taig machines are called Peatol in the UK I believe. It's a 3/4-16 thread on the tip of the spindle- that's it. The internal taper is basically this strange little ER like system the company makes.

    Tool Holder Question

I think that it would be safe to say that the idea of buying a Taig mill and lathe might have met its end- maybe- depending on something peculiar. British people here- I have a question: If I order something from the UK and have it sent to the US, do I have to pay VAT?

    Tool Holder Question

I even debated if I was to buy a larger mill (X2 type) and was to use the Tormach tooling system I could just leave the collet for the tool holders in there (only uses one specialized collet) and put a lever on top of the machine to raise or lower the draw so I could change out the tool holders.

    Tool Holder Question

Thank you John! This is why I like this forum, it's educational. Taig mills and lathes are a lot like Sherlines and unimats I suppose. They aren't all that large and mostly for small hobby work. I already own a massive milling machine (Lagun FTV-1, all three thousand pounds of it) and a Delta...

    Tool Holder Question

I guess here would be a better way to put it: I am trying to make a less annoying to change tool holding system for a Taig mill.

    Tool Holder Question

Norman, I have been trying to devise a way to make tool holders for a Taig that are easier to change out than having to unscrew the cap keeping the collet closed. Something where the tool could already be mounted to the holder.

    Tool Holder Question

Hello everyone! I have a really (being frank here) stupid question: If an end mill holder can hold an end mill securely with just a little divot in the shank and a grub screw, could not in theory on a small machine (Taig) would a small tool holder connect to the spindle the same way- with a...

AL320G Lathe - The Big Clean

Joco, really nice lathe you have there! Good job! If I am not mistaken it looks like it was made by a Chinese company called Weiss? I believe. If I am not mistaken that is one of the better machine companies in mainland China. I haven't had bad luck yet with Chinese stuff- all of my...

    2' gauge locomotive power question

Sir, just as a suggestion to save you from some headache and money, I would considering narrowing the gauge a little bit. It would stand to reason that if you were to go to say... 15" gauge, you would have support from the 1/4 scale folks as well. Now, if you are dead set on 2' gauge...

    Lathe Tooling

Norman, I think that I could make a simple hand tapper with out any issue- and for a lot less. A fairly sizable amount of my model engineering allowance is about to start flying out the door for my Allen Models Fitchburg Northern project. Thankfully with the large engines I have another hand...

    Lathe Tooling

What I found that Harbor Freight had (that looked interesting at least) was some 5/16ths HSS tool holders. Came in a set with lathe dogs and stuff- but Grizzly had the important part (the holders) by themselves for less. I think that the grinder alone would be fine. For finishing I doubt I...
