    soft soldering question

Amazon. Lots of options, but the one you want is the 63/37 (or as close to that as you can get) eutectic tin/lead solder. Avoid rosin core, it's intended for electronic use (or use it, but with a good metal flux). Another good source is any stained glass supply house. That tends to be 50/50. I'm...

    BAZMAK-Diary of a Myford ML7 lathe restoration

Have you looked at Amazon? Maybe not a great option where you live, but oilite bushings as you describe are in the 2-4 USD range unless I've misunderstood what you're looking for. If you could identify the bushings you need (exact sizes ID, OD, length) I'd be quite happy to purchase here in the...

Broken change gear shaft on a grizzly 4003g lathe

Little Machine Shop sells a set of change gears, metric module 1, which includes 2(!) 40 tooth gears. For 35 bucks the set. Looks as if the OP is going to try to clean up his original gear. If that fails, this is a pretty easy way to get a new one. Could probably turn around and sell the rest...

Broken change gear shaft on a grizzly 4003g lathe

Amazon lists change gears from Boston Gear. This one looks like 40t (oops, you said that) probably 14.5 angle, 16 pitch (if it's not metric). About 40 bucks. Given Amazon's return policy, I'd just order what looked like the right one (ie, take a chance on both pressure angle and pitch) if you...

    Rhodes Shaper

Patrick, I have a 7" Rhodes shaper, serial #16. I have completely disassembled, cleaned, and restored it. It was in amazing condition; no broken parts, one bearing restored. I'm probably the 4th owner, perhaps 5th. I've sent a PM with my contact info, would be happy to share documentation and...

    Plan drawing programs

Cut2D and other programs from Vectric are pretty intuitive. Free trial. Some, modest, limitations. Great support. That said, TurboCad is perfectly fine -I use it routinely when C2D is just too simpleminded. I encourage you to stick with it; a hundred to a hundred fifty hours or so of general...

    Need Help VFD-Variable Frequency Drive

VFD is pretty much the answer for low HP 3ph powered by 1ph service. 2 hp sizes usually want 220 single phase in. Take a look at Teco or WEG VFD's from Dealers Electric. There are others, but Teco has a good rep. Various choices, figure about 175-300 bucks for 2+hp. Dealers used to be best price...

    Power hacksaw

Hmmm. I'm not sure I understand. No load, as in "motor not connected to anything" or no load, as in "motor hooked up to the saw but not cutting metal"? If the former, I suppose the motor just expects to be cooled by airflow from a moving vehicle. In that case add a fan and hope for the best. If...

    Power hacksaw

How much load are you putting on it? (Hint: if it's hot, it's overloaded.) These are very light duty motors- doesn't take much to push a little water off a bit of glass. Cutting metal is a lot different. Typical metal cutting saw is at least a quarter horse, usually more like a half to 2 or 3.

Old Willard Lathe Should I or Not

If there's heavy wear in one spot there's wear in others. Check out the ways very carefully. And the gearbox/bearings. Price is attractive- but if it's a commitment to completely regrind or rescrape the entire machine you need to know that. Personally, I'd have some reservations about the...

    Tap advice

Hard advice for most of us to take, but YES: toss taps (or resharpen) as soon as they seem even slightly dull. A few bucks saves a few hours, or a part. And re Crisco: I'm one of those guys. Taught to use it for reamers 50+ years ago (fill the flutes solid). I use A9 or chlorosulfunated oil for...

    Tap advice

Threading is not a one-size-fits-all deal. One should consider material and % of theoretical thread being cut. 1/4-20 and #7 drill is a standard what-size-drill-do-I-use chart seletion, which will give around 75% depth threads. 75% for hand tapping in steel is pushing the limit, especially...

My new Diamond in the rough

Go get a copy of "How to run a lathe". And for oil- 30W ND. Lots of other options, but generically that'll do pretty much everything.

    flange nuts

Amazon has them, roughly same price. Looks like the tiny size is just not used much; bigger ones are reasonably priced. Consider buying next smaller metric thread and rethreading, if you can find metric in stainless at a reasonable price. Otherwise, yep, looks like either 200 bucks worth of...

    Electrical question-blade welder

A transformer is a voltage converter, not a current converter. If a transformer delivers 12 volts out from a 120 input, the ratio is 10:1; that doesn't change. It'll deliver 24 volts when fed with 240, and 6 volts when fed with 60. So putting 220 into a transformer expecting 440 input means...

    chip/ machine concern

Aluminum foil. Conforms to ways, etc so it stays where it's put, wraps up for disposal, and if by chance it gets caught in the works, it tears and isn't a safety hazard. With CI, you can also wrap a few small magnets in the foil for even better collection and dust control - as long as you don't...

Harbor Freight silver tarps, cut and resewn into an open box shape. The blue stuff works too though less well.

    Air compressor oil?

Your dad was right. It's a piece of Chinese 1950 design, for heaven's sake. Don't overthink this.

    Lathe Tooling

Mr. Abildgaard, I have been a tangential user for many decades; your designs are excellent - though I use a different holder, and much prefer the 6 mm size. Carbide in a tangential is unquestionably better than HSS; but HSS is cheap! I have no doubt that carbide in a tangential holder will be...
