    I hate beeing that weak.

That is very creative. The only loophole I see is now that she understands how much money is being saved, she'll come up with more projects to do to split the difference.

Imgur.com is much better then photobucket. Make the switch, you'll be happy.

    lost pla casting

The only way to really learn casting is to start making mistakes and figuring out how to correct them.

    Bridgeport is on the way

I'm curious how the machine made it off the pallet jack and on to the floor. I'm also curious what it costs to hire someone for a job like that.

Rust prevention with Lanolin - It's better then oil

If I wanted to completely remove it from a surface I'd take a hair drier to warm it a bit, wipe it off with a rag, then clean up with kerosene or mineral spirits.

    Bridgeport is on the way

The way I look at it, there are many things you can do to a machine that probably won't hurt it but you never know what the cumulative effect is. Being that we don't run production shops, you may very well never see an ill-fated cumulative effect from a certain procedure. I do not claim to be...

    Bridgeport is on the way

All you need is three buttons, start, stop, reverse... as impressive as it looks the control panel is total unecessary, a waste of money, and I would say it detracts from the classic styling of the machine, as well. Leave on the original buttons, and wire them to the VFD, or a magnetic starter...

new lathe just for the modeling

It took me three years to get my 13" lathe up and running... by no means am I rushing you.

    Bridgeport is on the way

The vari speed heads have a rather complex transmission inside of them to provide speed control. This transmission is engineered to expect input from a motor running at a constant speed and torque. The transmission provides a full range of speeds with infinite control between them. The machine...

    Electrical wiring consultation

The original switches are big industrial switches already mounted to the machine in a convenient spot. The VFD is ideally going to be mounted in a safe spot where oil, coolant, and swarf won't get to it. You don't need a pot since its vari speed. Now if you don't like those switches you can...

    Bridgeport is on the way

The speed should be controlled with the vari-speed head only, not the VFD. In fact, a rotary phase converter should really be be used for this machine instead of a VFD.

new lathe just for the modeling

I will be very upset if I don't get to see pics of this lathe sitting inside your shop, cleaned up, and making chips.

You should be able to wire the bridgeport switches into the logic control of the VFD for start/stop.

    Poor Man's Dividing Head

Gus, I really enjoy your work. Particularly because certain things for you are hard to get and you are good at getting the job done despite the circumstances. Also, I'm amazed how fast you work too!

Nothing wrong with using 10 guage in place of 12... Just say you did it for less voltage drop. Tho, me being me, I'd say if you have any future cabling projects planned it might be worth saving. You didn't specifically say romex, but I'm assuming that's what you are using between the...

    Electrical wiring consultation

When I made my last post I forgot you are running a VFD. The VFD specifications may very well call for a 20 or 30 amp circuit, even though the motor will only use a fraction of it. The motor's amp specifications need to be configured in the VFD and it'll provide the over current protection to...

Nice score! What VFD are you using?

I would say use a standard fused disconnect at the machine location with fuses rated based on the machine specifications. There's no reason to use a twist lock (what a great connector!) because you wont be moving the bridgeport around the shop. In fact the "code" would tell you to use a fused...

    Minilathe improvement

In the old South Bend documentation I've read, they recommended turning a shaft with two collars on either side. You take a very light finishing cut under power feed against both collars. If they are the same diameter then you are good to go.
