    What's happened to my crucible?

I know a few backyard metal casters who use pure silicon and they complain that takes a long time to dissolve in copper but for me ferrosilicon dissolves in a few minutes. This is why I use it because it is a low melting point substitute for steel.

    What's happened to my crucible?

That is a really bad slag build up on the top of your crucible and I have never seen that happen when I make silicon bronze. It maybe that it is a poor quality crucible and with extra heat output it has gone way past max temperature. Years ago I was given a crucible and did a aluminium melt...

    Aluminium casting problem.

Can you please give some details of the structural members you melt?

    Aluminium casting problem.

Many years ago I used chlorine tablets but they are really bad for your lungs so I don't use any fluxes or degassing pellets.

    Aluminium casting problem.

I have a problem with aluminium casting that I cannot figure out why it is doing it? I made a video with closeups showing that defect.

    F.I.R.E. (Foundry Invitational & River Exhibit) - 2024

I would love to go but it is a long and expensive jet plane trip to get there.

Nice looking iron castings and they look great after machining.

Gravity fed diesel burning furnace startup

I have not been there since 2019. If you want to cast your small engine projects and you live nearby no point in making your own furnace and sand. Say hello to doc for me.

    Recasting a broken casting.

I watched the video and I have a similar method using a hacksaw to cut a small piece off and use a torch to see if it burns. Using a file is a better method.

    Recasting a broken casting.

So do I with every post about foundry work put endless warnings with that post and put off everyone trying it for themselves? So does everyone post endless warnings when using machine tools and other operations that could be dangerous in their workshop for beginners?

    Recasting a broken casting.

The leftovers from my last melt were aluminium rims which did not burn at that time and the rest for this melt were bicycle rims which I have melted many times because they are easier to cut up for melting. Aluminium car rims are the best alloy to melt and do not contain magnesium. I did melt VW...

    Recasting a broken casting.

I tried to straighten a casting for my electric saw and it broke. So I cast another part and made a video about it. At the moment it is summer where I live and my green sand tends to dry out before the mold has been completed so I added lots of water to make up another mold. It was way too much...

    Dieter from Germany

You could connect it in a delta connection but it would have to spin a lot faster to get the same voltage. That is a great achievement to cut all those steel laminations and install all the copper windings! It is something I would never attempt. With 16 pole pairs depending if the four stator...

    Dieter from Germany

Hi Dieter I really like the generator you made! So I have two questions about your generator, In the photo it shows three wires coming out of the generator so is it generating three phase? Where did the stator windings come from? I did the same thing using a bread maker single phase motor and...

Backyard centrifugal iron casting (cylinder liners)

I have always wanted to try centrifugal iron casting but I am very wary of pouring hot iron into a spinning mold. So I came across this video about making parts for a model engine using this process. The one mistake he made was to pour iron onto the steel plate at the end of the mold which will...

still learning, what causes this texture

Looking at your sand it is very coarse but what you can do is dust the mold with talcum powder and smooth it out using your finger or a spoon. pouring aluminium at a cooler temperature can give a smoother finish.

Using a microwave oven to harden a sodium silicate core.

A viewer posted a comment on my video that wikipedia has three methods to harden sodium silicate for cores and molds. One of the three methods uses a ester based chemical to harden sodium silicate. I did try to get some years ago but had to buy large quantities so CO2 was the go to method until...

Melting steel with a backyard furnace.

I recently purchased a infrared pyrometer that goes to 1500C and when the hot weather goes away I will do a iron pour to test it out. Here is the link on ebay, the price has gone up a little since I purchased mine. Digital Infrared Thermometer Color LCD Non-Contact Temperature Gun Max 1500â AU...

Melting steel with a backyard furnace.

So true, although I have a platinuim tip pyrometer I found after melting iron for a long time the time taken is a very good indicator of when to pour.
