    Commer T3S

Hi Daz WOw some old memories for me there. Way back in 1969 at the age of 15 I started as an apprentice at a Commer and Dodge garage. One of the first jobs I was involved with was a TS3 engine. They suffered from broken blower shafts which were about 2 feet or so in length. They would snap at...

Hi For many years I have had this type fitted to my lathe and milling machines I have no connection to the above company just a satisfied customer They can be used with the supplied readouts which are ok but I have used a programme called TouchDRO which is a free download and works on any...

    Iguage junk digital scales

Hi I have the igauge scales on both my milling machines and my lathe set up with blue tooth TouchDro and they work brilliantly. The only problem I had was on one of the milling machines. the scale on the tablet would jump all over the place. I cured it by using a battery instead of the mains...

A Really, Really Good Book on Engine Building

Hi I built a 7'' rotary table a while back and has been very useful. I made pretty much everything myself including the worm and gear. You can find a full write up here Building a 7" rotary table (modelenginemaker.com) Hope that helps Cheers Rich

    Torch for silver solder.

Hi I'm a bit late replying to this, so not sure if this has been mentioned above. For years I managed with the cheapo Machine Mart torch but when I started on my first loco boiler I bit the bullet and bought a Sievert torch kit. Bought it from Cup alloys at one of the model engineering shows...

Autodesk Fusion 360 or other free software?

Hi Calum I was a big fan of CorelDraw (Which I owned with a serial No.) for many years. When I bought a new computer the programme would not re-install. CorelDraw then started to demand ridiculous amounts of money to "upgrade me". A quick search on the internet revealed an awful lot of people...

    Parting tool chatter

Hi I know I have joined this a little late but I can offer a few ideas that might help. I have had a lot of the problems mentioned above so decided to solve a lot of the issues I was having. I completely re designed and built a rear parting tool I wrote an article describing the build which...

    Fusion 360 replacement

Hi Thanks for all the feed back guys👍 I have tried running it in compatibility mode and under win 7 but no joy. I have several other programmes I use, Myford gear calculator, model engineers utilities etc that are XP only so my workshop computer handles them. I think my main point was that...

    Fusion 360 replacement

Hi Thanks for the offers guys. Re the Coreldraw files I can use the old XP computer in the workshop to open the old files when needed. I have managed to open them with some other programmes but they are not always 100% successful. I think my main point was that you pay your money to a company...

    Fusion 360 replacement

Hi Not sure if this will be of any use. I was a user and fan of Coreldraw for years. I owned a legit copy that I was happy with, it did every thing I needed. After years of happily using Windows XP my old computer died. I invested in a new all singing and dancing PC that came with windows 10 pre...

    A portable engine

hi Arnold A quick drawing, slightly different to the previous one. This one shows the size of the steam chest. The admission ports are 2mm wide x 8mm and the exhaust port is 4mm wide x 8mm. There is a 2mm wall thickness between admission and exhaust ports. The slide valve would be 12mm...

    A portable engine

Hi A question ??? Am I right in saying that in its central position the slide valve covers all 3 ports. When it moves to the right it uncovers the left admission port and when moving an equal amount to the left it uncovers the right admission port. Cheers Rich

    A portable engine

Hi Although this engine is being built without plans as such. much of it so far being built as I go along some parts need to be more carefully worked out. The steam ports and slide valve being a good example. I will only get one chance at machining them so I have to get it right, mistakes can't...

    A portable engine

Hi I had to spend quite some time cleaning up the parts. The valve chest cover had distorted a bit when silver soldering so I had to bring that back to flat with some wet and dry on a bit of glass as a surface plate. After a polish though they are starting to look like something. In this shot...

    A portable engine

Hi Yes thats right John, I perhaps should have mentioned it to help those that have yet to try silver soldering. The square piece that is silver soldered to the valve chest cover has 4 light centre punch marks on the valve chest cover to keep the square piece just clear of the surface to allow...
