    Spindle preload/end play question

I thought I would make a final post on this thread in case anyone searches in the future. As Eric mentions above the documentation from ArcEuroTrade is excellent. If you own one of the Sieg mills listed, download the PDF, even if not changing bearings. If you are in the UK, might not hurt to...

    Spindle preload/end play question

My mistake in wording. Taper, thrust and sealed ball. The thrust bearing is 18, 5.5mm balls, not too big, and I don't think can carry any preload. I am "guessing" some small end play is necessary.

    Spindle preload/end play question

Just finished putting bearings in my Grizzly SX3 mill spindle. The originals went bad after a short time and did not have a chance as the quill was full of grit. Grizzy sent replacement bearings promptly. Following the guide I downloaded from the Arc Eurotrade web site, diassembly and bearing...

Hi all, from the new guy.

My first three engines are materials kits. Liney's and the Grizzly stirling. I really do not want to go too fast. It's a hobby. Start slow, enjoy each build, tune up the machines, replace the buggered up spindle bearings in the mill :p and generally have fun. Not on piece work in my shop...

Source for SX3 (Grizzly) spindle bearings?

Jeff, Got it! ...and it is an excellent document. Actually, there are a couple of "tricks" you would struggle to figure out without reading it. Just getting the face plate off the front is a stumper (lower the Z scale). It's also going to handy putting the basket case on my workbench back...

Source for SX3 (Grizzly) spindle bearings?

Pete, Thanks for reposting this. I had actually finally stumbled on the excellent info in that thread a day or so ago. I have also been very remiss in not mentioning that Grizzly shipped replacement bearings after I contacted them by email. Their support team seem to be very concerned with...

Source for SX3 (Grizzly) spindle bearings?

Phil, I think you are right about this, as long as it's apart, might as well do a nice job. The other replies pointing to Arc Eurotrade and mentioning gears are referring to the X3. The SX3 has a different spindle and no gears in the head stock. I did search the Arc web site and found some...

Source for SX3 (Grizzly) spindle bearings?

I have searched the forum and Internet fairly thoroughly and cannot find a (US) source for SX3 (Grizzly) spindle bearings. Just a few threads of little help. Anyone know where they might be ordered? My mill has very few hours but the spindle was always suspiciously noisy. I had carefully...

Where do you buy your copper, brass and bronze?

I use two places, although I'm not sure if either is great deal or not. Too new at this. Anyway: http://www.hobbymetalkits.com/index.html Hobbeymetalkits has both assortments and odds and ends. They deliver quickly and everything as promised. Really don't know them but for for some reason...

Lathe accident, Tool organizer, bad idea.

I am really glad to see this thread pop back to the top. I read every word of every post , then scrapped my latest lathe shelf idea and ordered a proper lathe file and handle (thanks for heads up on that Chris). I also have noticed, and heed, that little voice that tells me something is not...

    7''x14'' lathe

Could take a minute to expand on the comment. I have a C4 that I am just getting familiar with. Why HHS over carbide? Just because of the material that model makers use, or is there more too it? Thanks in advance.

    Giant scale machining!

Absolutely wonder old photos. Thanks for posting. Brings back some memories of working in a rebuild shop in the '70's. worked on lot's of old stuff, not that big, but close. One very hot summer my boss and I spent some time scraping a 40' planner table. I soon figured out that digging holes in...

    New Member from Upper Michigan

Not to hyjack Wil's hello: BUT, I love Christmas. It's been some years but we have traveled many times in the area. As I recall there is a good campgrourd there. Also, years ago, hiked and boated the PR lake shore before Grand Portal collapsed and the top blew off Miner's Castle. Sorry Wil...

    New Member from Upper Michigan

Wil, That's a nice selection of machines. I am just, over the last year, outfitting my shop as well. It's the tooling that will set you back. The nice thing is, I have been doing it piece meal, so the wife has not noticed (I think :)). So: Upper Michigan as in Upper Lower or the UP?

    Woodturning On The Metalworking Lathe

I have both types of lathes in my small shop and it seems to me it would totally depend on the task at hand. If I was making a pattern or some"exactly" dimensioned part, my little C4 would be the machine. On the other hand, if it were a typical, more artistic, wood working project the Jet wood...

    Help with unusual machine

Wow, what a cool piece of equipment. Solid. Well worth the effort to get it in operation. ...and you are right, certainly no Unimat :) Also, looks like lots of adjustments, should be able to tackle tasks that are difficult on standard machines. You have got a jewel. Thanks for the...

    Use MODERN Materials for build?????

Aesthetics (also spelled æsthetics) is a branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of art, beauty, and taste, with the creation and appreciation of beauty. It is more scientifically defined as the study of sensory or sensori-emotional values, sometimes called judgments of sentiment and taste...
