I just recieved my new South Bend 8K

Cool, we used SB lathes on the subs that I rode in the 70s.

    Hey Y'all from Texas

Howdy, New myself, Lake Jackson. I went to Lathe School at the Groton Sub Base in the 70s, but have not turned since I got out, however, I am looking to start relearning. I am a steam engine kinda guy. I crawled every inch of the BB Texas engine room when one had a whole lot more freedom to do...

    Mini-lathes

Yikes!! :o Evidently I was looking at a micro-Proxxon. I just looked at the PD400. Perhaps I should call it the Pro$$on. Back up to "fake" South Bend prices again.

    Mini-lathes

boy howdy to that!! Not no why I'm gonna pay that much. Also, in my searches, people hang on to the "real" South Bends or want even more$$ than the new ones. I have added Taig machines to my final list of wanna equipment, however, Proxxon has caught my eye; looks like US and German built.

    Building from round stock

I appreciate the insights. I guess that I will sell it also. Alas, I just ordered new wheel guards (tires) for it. Amazing, it has just been sitting there, no use, and the things come apart at the seam. What a whizzer.

    Building from round stock

Howdy, My oops, should have said bar stock, have round on my mind for some reason. I believe that I have narrowed things down to the Micro Mark or Little Machine Shop companies. Years back, I had what I suppose was Norm fever and got a mess of Jet and Delta woodworking tools. I tried, but I...

    Picking up my Lathe today

Wow, that's one beastly machine. It looks like I would have to burn my garage down in order to get it to fit.

    Mini-lathes

I have been looking at TheLittleMachineShop and The Micro-Mark machines. Any insights, knowledge and all would be appreciated.

    Building from round stock

I reciently snuck a Harley home, and now my wife hears me talking about getting a lathe. Some day, sooner than later, I'll try to seek one home. In the meantime, where/what can I use to learn about using round stock to make engines; seeing as how I was advised to start that way rather than using...

    Howdy from South Texas

Use round stock rather than castings. Wow! I appreciate the advice, I sure would have never 'thunk' of that. I had been buying pre-machined kit$.. ~DN

    Howdy from South Texas

Howdy David, I say South Texas out of habit. I worked at the South Texas Nuclear Project for 17 years after leaving Arkansas Nuclear One in 1978. Actually was born in Mercedes and grew up just north of Corpus. Now living south of Houston.

    Howdy from South Texas

Yep; however; the key word is DESIGNED. Alas, there was never a guarantee that they would surface; frequent thought when I rode Nautilus.

    Mini-lathes

If I understand things correctly, regardless of the brand name, the lathes are built by the same company, Sieg I think, in China. So what's with all the different brands, and models? Is there really any difference in quality or performance in say all the 7 X 14 as a group, or similar model? What...

    Howdy from South Texas

I went to lathe school on the Groton Submarine Base, in 1971. At the school and on the boats that I rode we had South Bend lathes. We carried no Machinery Repairmen (MRs) who actually are lathe, milling machine etc operators on the boats (they were stationed at the bases or on Sub Tenders). We...
