Does longer lathe ways have any disadvantage

I have worked in the past as a machinist for 13 years. I have run many types of machines. But primarily manual lathes. So my thought is the bigger the longer you can afford and have space and power for get that. You can always make small items but you can't make large ones. But you also have to...

How do you heat your shop ?

I don't, nature does it for me. Here is Southeast Texas the winters are "usually" mild. The problem for me is the Heat in the summer. My shop isn't insulated and I haven't installed the window a/c in the wall yet. So it is in the 90s for most of the summer. :( Dennis L.

I have had problems with "flickering" just before one of the inverters went out. I don't know why. I look for bad caps and hope for the best.

    Carbide Inserts

Hello All, I was given 7 Carbide Insert Turning tools. Well the only inserts that I have for them are the one on the tools. I have no idea what the part numbers are to get more when they need replacing. So I googled Carbide Insert Identification and found this PDF. I thought that maybe some of...

That is when you get a screw machine. We did quantities like that all the time for Amp Electronic Connectors. Don't know what the cost was though.

    Question on posting Alibre images.

Hello folks, This is directed to those that have posted an Alibre image. How do you get your image posted? I tried to do a "print screen" and send it to Photoshop then crop the un-needed junk out. Unfortunately I can't figure how to do it with Photoshop. I can do it with Paintshop Pro. But it's...

    dead LCD monitor

I know its an old post. But have fixed your monitor or still have it? I have fixed 4 of my monitors. Your problem is 99% chance it is a capacitor problem in the Back light inverter. If you hold a flash light up to your screen while it is on you should see whatever is on the screen. If you have...

    Chuck Key

I went to a vocational High School for machining. We were taught that once that chuck key goes in the chuck it's part of your hand until you remove it from the chuck. When I was a Junior a Freshman left the key in the chuck. The shop teacher caught him so he taped it to his hand. Of course he...

Thank you for the kind words. I have a brass bell and 304 SS miniature goblet I made, not that special but I'll post a pic or two of them. The bell is about an inch and a half tall and the goblet is less than an inch. Regards, Dennis L.

Steam Vs. Air and other things

First a note on children getting hurt. I definitely would not want my 7 year old daughter to get hurt. She already has to worry about me being a member of "DADD, Dads Against Daughters Dating" ;D Before this was posted I had decided to work on just Air driven motors for now anyway. I started...

Steam Vs. Air and other things

Hi A.G. Fair question, don't be sorry for asking. Yes. I have 13 years of machining. I have done parts that were .125 long .093 diam. with a .062 hole in one end and a .010 hole all the way thru, to parts that had to be hoisted into the lathe with an over head gantry. I have run numerous manual...
